Senior Executive Director

Position Overview

Working with the Associate Vice President of Medical Advancement, the Senior Executive Director (Sr. ED) leads the philanthropic activities for the Wexner Medical Center (WMC), which includes: University Hospital, the Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital, the Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute, the Neurological Institute, and medical specialty areas, including robust programs in internal medicine and diabetes research.

The Sr. ED will create relationships and partnerships with physician leaders and hospital administrators to advance the culture of philanthropy emerging among researchers, clinicians, faculty, and staff at the WMC. Additionally, they will build effective relationships with the WMC CEO, university president, vice presidents, provost, foundation board directors, deans, faculty, and unit development officers to facilitate the fundraising agenda as we continue our campaign to strengthen Ohio States reputation and drive philanthropic support. Utilizing these relationships, they will provide counsel and guidance to align WMC strategies and priorities to compelling fundraising opportunities with high-impact prospects, including catalyzing and increasing capital fundraising projects.

The Sr. ED provides leadership and creates the strategy to identify and develop a robust pipeline of donors to the Wexner Medical Center through strategic direction of a team of experienced development professionals and management of their own portfolio of major and principal level prospects. This position leads efforts to increase pipeline activity and gift closures for major and principal level gifts by partnering with and coaching medical center leaders and fundraisers; prepares annual goals and tracks progress to drive successful results and works to drives efficiency and effectiveness in the fundraising enterprise.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provides leadership and creates the strategy to identify and develop a robust pipeline of WMC donors; supervises and directs development professionals across multiple hospitals; hires, trains, and supervises staff; establishes and monitors goals, provides performance feedback and coaching, and supports professional development; meets regularly with key staff to review performance and strategies with regard to fundraising, teamwork, resource allocation, personnel allocation; accountable for each area to achieve goals that are developed in the annual goal setting process; conducts prospect strategy sessions; advocates for area with regard to resources in order to accomplish goals; works to build cohesiveness within the Core and think across units to enhance overall fund raising for Ohio State.

Builds effective relationships with medical center and university leadership, physician leaders and hospital administrators, deans, directors, and key members of assigned areas, including volunteers; provides counsel and guidance to align WMC strategies and priorities to compelling fundraising opportunities with high-impact prospects.

Builds/maintains prospect group, serving as prospect manager for major donors at $500,000 and above; responsible for strategy, cultivation and solicitation of principal gift donors with a capacity for gifts of $5,000,000 and above.

Serves as a member of the Associate Vice Presidents leadership team; establishes fundraising policies, programs and strategies; represents WMC and Advancement on university committees as needed and completes other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education/experience
  • Twelve (12) years of fundraising experience
  • Record of achievement in major and principal gift fundraising including identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major and principal gift prospects
  • Experience in fundraising pipeline development
  • Superior communication skills, including writing and public speaking
  • Five (5) years management experience
  • Ability and willingness to travel

  • Masters degree
  • Extensive knowledge of grateful patient fundraising
  • Demonstrated record of teamwork, collaboration and strong motivational and leadership skills
  • Proven ability to handle multiple, complex fundraising activities simultaneously and coordinate solicitation strategies in a decentralized environment
  • Experience working in other advancement departments such as donor relations and stewardship, donor communications and/or alumni relations ability to plan and implement a fundraising plan
  • High level of creativity, initiative, and motivation

The budget for this position is up to $200,000. The offer for this position will be based on internal equity and the candidate's qualifications.

Salary range: $171,000 - $227,500
