The Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a multidisciplinary research community where investigators across engineering, medicine and dentistry collaborate to develop innovative solutions that address global challenges in human health. Located in the heart of Canada’s largest health-care research network, our faculty offer quality education to students who receive training in biomedical and clinical engineering. These highly experienced faculty have been involved in launching more than 20 start-up companies and driving three major biomedical engineering commercialization ventures.
Your opportunity:
Under the general direction of the Director of Operations, the Senior Financial & Business Officer is responsible for the payroll of all appointed and non-appointed staff, financial planning and reporting for operating funds, informing senior leaders of funding issues, as well as making recommendations on budget allocations involving multiple sources of revenue and/or recovery.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Implementing plans and process improvements for financial administration activities
- Forecasting, planning and monitoring multiple complex budgets
- Analyzing financial trends and preparing analytical reports and forecasts for management decision making
- Monitoring department budget to ensure expenditures remain within budgeted allocations
- Interpreting and applying policies and procedures when making independent decisions
- Applying the University Guide to Financial Management and other applicable policies, agency and regulatory requirements
- Developing and maintaining procedures for the use of space and equipment
- Directing the activities of a group of staff-appointed employees all performing a similar function
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Business Administration or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of five (5) years of recent and related senior-level budgeting, forecasting, accounting, and financial analysis experience.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience including accounts receivable, payroll, FIS and HRIS or similar systems.
- Experience overseeing, planning and preparing complex budgets, forecasting and statistical information; monitoring and reconciling financial activity and payroll distribution and report generation, including preparing financial statements.
- Experience overseeing all financial transactions (revenue and expenditures) against operating budgets.
- Experience with financial reporting, payroll, purchasing and lease agreements and internal control principles.
- Excellent knowledge of general accepted accounting principles, collective agreements or other related financial policies and procedures is required.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated analytical ability with great attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise a high level of confidentiality, professionalism, good judgment, initiative, tact, and discretion.

- Completion of a recognized professional program (e.g. CPA).
