Senior Financial Analyst
Position Summary
The Department of Anesthesiology is an academic department at Columbia University Irving Medical Center focused on clinical, education, and research priorities with over 100 full-time clinicians, researchers, and 140 trainees. Reporting to Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the Department of Anesthesiology, the Senior Financial Analyst will provide support for the Department’s budgeting, financial reporting, and analysis. This position will provide the candidate with the opportunity to contribute to the department’s priorities and learn about academic medicine by working closely with the Department’s finance team. Under the direction of the CFO, responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Responsibilities
- Participate in the annual budget submission, including preparing budget templates and uploading budget data into the University budget system
- Perform ongoing budget updates and adjustments for quarterly forecasts
- Generate periodic financial reports as needed to support ongoing department decision-making
- Review and update salary allocations on a regular basis to ensure accuracy and compliance across multiple funding sources including clinical accounts, grants, endowments, and other sources
- Prepare monthly reports and perform in-depth monthly financial review of the department's grant portfolio including budgets and projections
- Reconcile each Principal Investigator’s (PI) portfolio of accounts, which may consist of grants, endowments, gifts, and other funding sources
- Support project closeouts including review of budgets and expenses and preparation of journal entry and journal voucher transactions
- Ensure completion of quarterly expense attestations with each PI, and assist Grants Manager with annual effort reporting
- Other responsibilities as requested
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience
- Advanced Excel (formulas, pivot tables, lookups) skills are required.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to use good judgment in handling confidential financial data
- Strong work ethic with ability to manage multiple priorities along with a strong desire to be an actively engaged team member
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in finance, accounting or business administration
- Knowledge of PeopleSoft financial system is a plus
