ODU is seeking candidates for a Senior Financial Reporting Analyst (full-time, 12 month) position.
The Senior Financial Reporting Analyst position supports the Office of Finance in financial analysis and reporting. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Finance and University Controller, this role requires strong accounting and finance skills to ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulations, identify financial trends, investigate discrepancies, and provide insights that support strategic decision-making and improve overall financial reporting. This position supports financial reporting operations and assists with ensuring a strong internal control framework exists to provide timely and accurate financial reports.
This role requires strict adherence to deadlines to ensure accurate, timely completion of reconciliations, schedules, financial reports, and compliance-related tasks. Position must effectively prioritize workloads and schedules, manage competing responsibilities, and maintain accuracy under strict time constraints. Meeting deadlines is critical for supporting organizational decision-making, external (Commonwealth) reporting, regulatory compliance, and maintaining trust and accountability with management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the development and implementation of financial reporting tools and processes. Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of financial reporting and analysis.
- Conduct in-depth analysis of financial data to identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement or concern.
- Assist in the preparation, review and/or analysis of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Collaborate with departments to gather financial data and ensure compliance with reporting standards.
Required Education
Master’s degree in business administration, finance, higher education administration or related field. Or a bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, higher education administration or related field with equivalent work experience to a master’s degree in business administration, finance, higher education administration or related field.
Required Qualifications:
- Expert knowledge of organizational processes, protocols and procedures.
- Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP, GASB, financial accounting/general ledger experience and their application to fund accounting.
- Considerable technical knowledge of various Accounting Software, ERP systems.
- Considerable knowledge of and ability to analyze complex business processes and demonstrated ability to manage projects effectively.
- Strong accounting and finance skills to ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulations, identify financial trends, investigate discrepancies, and provide insights that support strategic decision-making and improve overall financial reporting.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and influence, both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively gain support of and lead stakeholders to a common goal.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes, focus on priorities, strategies, and vision.
- Demonstrated ability of collaborating across diverse teams and successfully facilitating projects, demonstrating the ability to incorporate varied input and build consensus to achieve positive outcomes, particularly within financial or operational environments.
- Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex financial data and communicate findings effectively to provide actionable insights for strategic decision-making.
- Considerable related work experience, preferably in a university environment.
- Some prior project management and/or consulting experience with a focus on business process improvement, preferably in technology, finance, higher education.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Considerable previous financial experience in an institution of higher education, Public GASB Ellucian institutions is a plus.
- Advanced consulting, relationship building, and strategic thinking skills.
- Advanced analytical, problem-solving, project planning and implementation skills.
- Advanced strategic thinking and consulting skills in guiding the organization toward workable strategies and solutions.
- Familiarity with ERP platforms such as Ellucian Banner is a plus
