Senior Laboratory Animal Health Technician

Job Overview

Under general supervision of licensed veterinarian, the Senior Laboratory Animal Health Technician provides advanced technical support for the care and treatment of animals including rodents and large animals in a clinical environment, may supervise lower level technicians, may provide expertise in specialty area; oversees and instructs veterinary medicine students and lower level technicians in clinical and treatment procedures, demonstrates and supervises execution of ordered treatments and diagnostic procedures; orients, demonstrates, supervises and assists with aseptic procedures and animal restraint; coordinates treatment plans with veterinarian and researchers, and consults IACUC protocol for compliance oversight; communication with investigators, graduate students, and staff regarding health concerns, and / or husbandry issues; provides technical services for investigators including blood and tissue collection and anesthetic induction; prepares and submits charges for services rendered, completes medical records, provides rodent handling and technical training for investigators, technicians, and students; provides surgical support to include but not limited to patient preparation, equipment set up, anesthetic monitoring, and patient recovery; other duties as assigned. The position will be full time including shared weekend responsibilities. Require successful completion of background check and post-hire physical. Potential exposure to sharps, rabies, irritating chemicals, zoonotic diseases, animal inflicted injury, and anesthetic gases.

This role will provide clinical and medical treatment core support to rodents and large animals. Working shared weekends and holiday hours required.

In support of The Ohio State Universitys Research and Innovation activities, the selected candidate will work within Enterprise for Research, Innovation, and Knowledge (ERIK) to support the University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR) and Office of Attending Veterinarian (OAV) mission of providing humane animal care and facilitating biomedical research discoveries.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's degree and certification in veterinary technology.
  • Registered Veterinary Technician through The Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board.
  • Must pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in biology or animal sciences or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current AALAS registration or certification.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience working in laboratory animal medicine
  • Animal care experience and rodent handling experience
  • Excellent organization and communication skills.

The pay range for this job profile is $25.87 - $32.33. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on multiple factors including internal equity, units available budget, and the candidates qualifications.
