As a Senior Laboratory Technician within our Mechatronics, Electronics and Digital Cluster, you will become the trusted technical expert supporting cutting-edge research and teaching across motion capture, user experience, electronics, sensors, communications, power systems, and cyber security laboratories. You will have the opportunity to design and conduct experiments, mentor staff and students in specialist equipment use, and directly contribute to groundbreaking innovations in human-computer interaction, autonomous systems, and communications networks. This role offers you the chance to develop your expertise whilst making a tangible impact on both research outcomes and student learning experiences.
Your responsibilities will include:
  • Deliver Expert Technical Support: Be the go-to resource for electronics, mechatronics, and instrumentation expertise, instructing and advising staff and students on specialist laboratory equipment, online management systems, and best practices to ensure optimal equipment utilisation.
  • Maintain and Optimise Laboratory Equipment: Conduct scheduled maintenance, break-fix repairs, calibration, and safety compliance checks on electronic test and measurement instruments, control circuits, and battery systems, ensuring measurement accuracy and regulatory adherence.
  • Design and Conduct Experiments: Develop and manufacture prototypes, design and execute experiments, and apply your expertise in PCB design, electronic prototyping, control systems, and battery technologies to support research activities.
  • Manage Laboratory Operations and Compliance: Oversee laboratory inventory and procurement, maintain accurate documentation, complete quality and occupational health and safety requirements, and develop risk assessments, standard operating procedures, and inductions to ensure a safe and compliant working environment.
  • Prepare Teaching Resources: Prepare practical classes and long lead time items to support teaching activities, ensuring students have access to well-maintained equipment and resources for effective learning.

You are an experienced electronics and mechatronics professional with a relevant degree or trade qualification, possessing extensive expertise in PCB design, electronic prototyping, control systems, and battery technologies, combined with excellent communication skills, strong problem-solving abilities, and a demonstrated commitment to laboratory safety, scientific integrity, and delivering high-quality technical support to diverse stakeholders.
You may also:
  • Have extensive practical experience in electronics prototyping, PCB design, fabrication, and assembly, with proficiency in photolithography, electroplating, and wet processing systems.
  • Possess demonstrated expertise in setting up, calibrating, and troubleshooting electronic test and measurement instruments, with knowledge of calibration standards such as ISO/IEC 17025 and NIST traceability.
  • Have proven experience building, testing, and diagnosing control circuits, including analog and digital systems, motor drivers, and embedded hardware interfaces, using diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes and logic analysers.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of battery safety protocols, including safe operation and testing of lithium-ion battery packs, battery management systems, and protective circuitry.
  • Possess experience working within a scientific laboratory or tertiary education environment, with familiarity in managing online laboratory management systems.
