Expected skills:
Applicants must show a strong interest in teaching as well as a high-level scientific record in accordance with UGA’s ambitions. They must identify with UGA’s values, that is, being open to the world, emphasising ethics and scientific integrity, showing an interest in teamwork and being committed to the community. They should also have a sense of responsibility, in particular with regard to environmental and social issues.
Context and educational objectives:
- The successful candidate will teach Latin language and literature at various levels, from L1 to M2, as well as courses to prepare students for teaching qualifications (CAPES and Agrégation, particularly on authors of classical Latin prose). Courses are held at two locations: Grenoble and Valence.
- The successful candidate will teach specialised courses as part of the Master's programme in Arts, Literature, and Civilizations, with a focus on Ancient Sciences (seminars on literature and the reception of Antiquity, paleography, codicology, and ecdotics), as well as courses for non-specialists.
- The successful candidate will be invited to participate in the TIDAC Graduate School program (Texts, Images, Documents of Classical Antiquity - research seminars and thematic schools) and to supervise theses and internships in their specialty.
- The successful candidate will be encouraged to take on teaching responsibilities within the 3LG department (Latin and Greek languages and literature): for example, supporting first-year students (as a teacher-advisor), or actions promoting the university in high schools, or taking responsibility for a curriculum, in collaboration with our partners at UFR ARSH (School of Arts and Humanities), particularly in the context of the dual degrees of Classics and History, Philosophy, Arts History and Archaeology.
Research project and scientific impact:
The successful candidate will join the Litt&Arts research unit, and specifically the Translatio centre, whose research focuses on Latin and Greek languages and literatures, from and beyond Antiquity in the strict sense. The successful candidate is expected to be a specialist in Latin language and literature of the Republican and Imperial periods with an expertise in Latin prose in the broadest sense – historiography, rhetoric, philosophy, scientific and technical texts. Their work may focus on the editing (including digitally), translation and transmission of Latin texts, and the cultural transfers that accompany them. The successful candidate will contribute to the research of the Translatio centre by opening up their research to issues of reception and may also contribute to the ELLASS program in didactics of Latin and Greek language and literature. They will be able to contribute to the work of the various research areas of the Litt&Arts UMR and will be encouraged to establish new local collaborations, for example with LUHCIE or IPHIG, as well as regional, national, and international collaborations and to play a leading role in seeking new funding for large-scale projects.
