The Department of Clinical Science and Education, Södersjukhuset (KI SÖS), conducts internationally recognized research focusing on common diseases and medical conditions, as well as education from undergraduate to doctoral level. The overall aim of all activities is to improve human health.
Description of the subject area
Internal medicine is a broad and complex medical discipline encompassing the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of a wide range of acute and chronic diseases of the body’s internal organs. The subject plays a central role in medical education and requires the integration of clinical, pathophysiological, and scientific perspectives. At KI SÖS, extensive teaching and successful research in internal medicine are conducted in close collaboration with the clinical departments at Södersjukhuset. Within the framework of the University Healthcare Unit (USVE), activities take place in an environment where advanced clinical care is combined with research and education, enabling evidence-based development of diagnostics and treatment in internal medicine. Södersjukhuset has a comprehensive mission within both inpatient and outpatient care for pulmonary and allergic diseases, and in recent years the hospital has made significant investments in these areas. We perform approximately 1,600 inpatient care episodes and around 3,500 outpatient visits annually. The focus of this position is pulmonary medicine, which encompasses diseases of the airways and lungs. Pulmonary medicine is a dynamic research field ranging from studies of pulmonary diseases to the development of diagnostics, biomarkers, and individualized treatment strategies, where close ties to clinical work enable translational research approaches.
Your mission
The position as Senior Lecturer in internal medicine and specialist physician includes responsibility for education in internal medicine within the medical programme at KI SÖS, as well as contributing to the further development of research within the subject area in collaboration with other departments and clinical units at Karolinska Institutet, healthcare services, and relevant research environments.
The work includes course responsibility and examiner duties for Clinical Medicine 2 – Internal Medicine: Advanced Studies (25.5 credits). The assignment includes responsibility for the course’s pedagogical content, implementation, and further development in close collaboration with the clinical units at Södersjukhuset. Other teaching assignments within the medical programme may also be relevant, as well as contributing to academic leadership in pedagogy and educational development at KI SÖS.
Parallel to the educational duties, you are expected to conduct and develop research in internal medicine, with a particular focus on pulmonary medicine. The research is carried out in close collaboration with clinical units, and the Senior Lecturer will be part of the unit’s research and education group.
The position includes clinical work corresponding to 40% as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician or chief physician in pulmonary medicine at Södersjukhuset, Region Stockholm. Clinical experience and presence are essential for organizing and further developing education and research closely linked to clinical practice.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on education and research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical skills, very good scientific skills and clinical skills.
For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements are stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure and these are applied in relation to the subject area of the established recruitment profile.
It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
The employment will be combined with an employment as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician or chief physician in pulmonary medicine at Södersjukhuset and therefore you must have a Swedish MD with specialist competence in pulmonary medicine, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.
Since the position includes clinical work, you must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR).
Assessment criteria
The Senior Lectureship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weigh qualifications as follows: scientific skills (3) pedagogical skills (3), leadership and collaboration skills (2) and clinical skills (2).

It is furthermore meritorious that you have demonstrated
- Experience in leading, developing, and implementing educational initiatives within the medical programme, particularly in internal medicine
- Experience as course coordinator and examiner within the medical programme, particularly in internal medicine
- Ongoing research in pulmonary medicine
- National and international collaboration in research
