At the Department of Neuroscience, research is conducted on the structure and function of the nervous system, from the molecular level to clinical application. The Department of Neuroscience has extensive responsibilities in undergraduate education for several study programs at KI, primarily in the areas of macro- and microscopic anatomy and neuroscience. The Department of Neuroscience hereby announces a position as Senior Lecturer in Neuroscience.

Description of the subject area

Research in neuroscience conducted at the department clarifies various aspects of the structure and function of the nervous system, both under normal conditions and in different diseases. The department has four primary research areas: “Cognitive Neuroscience,” “Genetic and Molecular Mechanisms of Nervous System Diseases,” “Neuronal Development, Biology and Pathology,” and “Neural Networks and Behavior.” These areas encompass a broad spectrum of projects that, using various techniques, are carried out at multiple levels—from individual molecules and cells to neural networks, behavior, and cognition.

Your mission

In your role as Senior Lecturer, you will independently lead a research group conducting high-quality neuroscience research with strong future potential. As head of the research group, you will also be responsible for staff and hold delegated responsibility for the work environment within the department.

More than half of your time will be devoted to teaching. You are expected to make significant contributions to doctoral and postdoctoral education through supervision and responsibility for, or participation in, courses and programs at the doctoral level. Within undergraduate education, you will serve as module and/or course coordinator and examiner in macroscopic anatomy and/or neuroscience in the undergraduate and advanced-level programs in which the department participates. This includes course responsibility for the two research-introductory courses for medical students (FoLäk 1 & 2) at KI as a central part of the position.

The role also includes overarching responsibility for KI’s whole-body donation program, located within the department’s teaching facilities. Education using donated bodies is an invaluable resource in the teaching of macroscopic anatomy. Your responsibility will be to ensure that the program operates in accordance with applicable legislation, ethical guidelines, and occupational health and safety requirements, as well as to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on education and research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical skills and very good scientific skills

It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

Since the position includes interactions with Swedish body donors, you must demonstrate proficiency in Swedish language. Furthermore, all undergraduate teaching is conducted in Swedish, therefore, you are you must demonstrate proficiency in Swedish language (C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR).

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills (2), pedagogical skills (3), leadership and collaboration skills (2)

It is furthermore meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • Documented teaching experience in macroscopic anatomy with positive evaluations from students.
  • Experience with whole-body donation programs.
  • Documented experience working with occupational health and safety issues, particularly chemical and biosafety matters, is considered an asset.
