Description of the subject area
The pediatric surgical specialty covers surgical conditions, primarily in the gastrointestinal tract and urinary tract, in children and adolescents. Trauma and pediatric oncological surgery are also included. The specialty was developed based on a need for expertise in caring for newborn children with congenital malformations. Neonatal surgery is a central part of the specialty and requires advanced multidisciplinary expertise and well-functioning collaboration with related specialties.
Karolinska University Hospital, Theme Children – Astrid Lindgren Children’s Hospital provides specialized and highly specialized care, and holds a national mandate for certain advanced pediatric and adolescent surgical procedures. Within the framework of the European reference networks, in which Karolinska University Hospital has a very strong role, very active work is underway to harmonize the care of rare diseases in Europe. Pediatric surgical research is very broad and includes translational research, clinical treatment studies, long-term follow-ups and epidemiological studies. Pediatric surgery is an important part of teaching at the medical program.
Your mission
You are expected to contribute to research and development in pediatric surgical research, for example by introducing and evaluating new models in teaching. You will contribute to integrating research, care and education within pediatric surgery.
The duties also include clinical service at Karolinska University Hospital, as the position is intended to be divided 50 percent at Karolinska Institutet as a lecturer and 50 percent at the Section of Pediatric Surgery at Karolinska University Hospital
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on education and research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific skills, the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical skills; very good scientific skills. The applicant must also be able to show clinical skills through specialist competence in pediatric surgery.

Further eligibility requirements
It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
The employment will be combined with an employment as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician or chief physician in pediatric surgery at Section of pediatric surgery, Astrid Lindgren Children’s Hospital, Karolinska University Hospital and therefore you must have a Swedish MD with specialist competence in pediatric and adolescent surgery as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.
Since the position includes clinical work, you must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale, CERS).
Assessment criteria
The Senior Lectureship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualificationsas follows: scientific skills (2), pedagogical skills (3), leadership and collaboration skills (2), and clinical skills (2).

To obtain an employment as specialist physician (*chief physician, assistant chief physician, specialist physician*) at Karolinska University Hospital, assessment of the applicant’s clinical qualifications by the hospital’s Expert Committee is mandatory.

Criteria for Specialist Physician Positions at Karolinska University Hospital:
- Appointment as assistant chief physician at Karolinska University Hospital requires a minimum of three years of full-time clinical service.
- Appointment as chief physician requires a minimum of five years of full-time clinical service within the primary specialty in addition to certified specialist competence, as well as a defined area of medical responsibility and expertise, and documented teaching and supervisory qualifications. A doctoral degree (PhD) is also required for appointment as Senior Consultant.
