Expected skills:

Applicants must show a strong interest in teaching as well as a high-level scientific record in accordance with UGA’s ambitions. They must identify with UGA’s values, that is, being open to the world, emphasising ethics and scientific integrity, showing an interest in teamwork and being committed to the community. They should also have a sense of responsibility, in particular with regard to environmental and social issues.

Context and educational objectives:

The PhITEM (Physics, Engineering, Earth, Environment, Mechanics) Department is seeking to strengthen its mechanical engineering teaching team by recruiting someone with solid and versatile training in mechanical engineering. The ideal profile will demonstrate adaptability and learning capacity to respond to evolving pedagogical needs.

Mechanical engineering skills

The successful candidate will primarily teach mechanical design and manufacturing, at bachelor's and master's levels in the form of lectures, tutorials and practical work. They must master the fundamentals of mechanical engineering and be capable of teaching in the following areas:

  • Mechanical design: design methods, systems engineering, component sizing, structural calculations, choice of materials and their treatments, architecture of multi-technological systems, design and numerical simulation (CAD/CAE),
  • Solid mechanics and strength of materials: stress analysis, deformations, structural behaviour,
  • Mechanical manufacturing: forming processes, machining, assembly, manufacturing chains.

Specific needs

  • Eco-design and sustainable engineering: consideration of environmental impacts in design, life cycle analysis, choice of eco-responsible materials and processes,
  • Optimization of mechanical components: topological optimization methods, optimal sizing, multi-criteria optimization,
  • Reliability of mechanical systems: failure analysis, predictive maintenance, component durability.

Candidates whose skills do not exactly match the specific needs mentioned above, but who demonstrate solid expertise in mechanical engineering and motivation to develop new pedagogical skills, are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will also participate in supervising internships, master's projects and information activities for prospective students (exhibitions, open days). They will also engage in facilitating the department's pedagogical platforms and participate in discussions about their evolution. In time, they will be expected to take on responsibilities in the administrative management of the program, particularly by assuming responsibility for a year of study (bachelor's or master's).

Research project and scientific impact:

The G-SCOP laboratory is a multidisciplinary laboratory focusing on scientific challenges related to changes in production systems. The laboratory's scope ranges from product design to production system management, drawing on strong optimization skills. As the only CNRS joint research unit focused on production systems, it has an international reach through its research networks (CIRP, Design Society, etc.) and its research projects related to Industry 5.0 and industrial renewal on a European scale.

The CCI team is recognised for its work in understanding and modeling design interactions in order to assist designers by developing dedicated methods and tools. It approaches this topic through original experimental approaches that support the implementation and development of new practices.

The challenges of environmental transition and the need for the industry sector to transform itself are driving the development of new approaches to responsible engineering that are more open, local, and participatory. These approaches aim to promote the emergence of frugal and sustainable innovation. Design methods and collective decision-making tools must adapt to new productive organisations that combine traditional industrial systems with alternatives such as fab labs, maker spaces, urban micro-factories, and other social and solidarity economy actors involved in the product life cycle. It should be added that the emergence of AI further expands the range of design tools and actors. In this landscape, digital technologies are seen as facilitators for the integration of these various design actors.

Recruitment needs include, but are not limited to:

  1. The design of mixed collaborative environments for Industry 5.0 and open design.
  2. The definition of tools for evaluating and characterising the performance of design environments.
  3. The development of multidisciplinary approaches for analysing and modeling human-human and human-systems interactions.
  4. The qualification of the conditions for collaboration in its multiple dimensions: spatial, temporal, cognitive, etc.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of mediation tools for extended collaboration in design projects. In response to growing demand for technical and societal innovation, they will design new ways of collaborating, taking into account society's need for greater sufficiency, the involvement of non-professional groups, the development of local, shared production systems, etc. They will study the relevance of the latest technological developments in visualisation, interaction, and artificial intelligence to meet the need for cooperation between professional and non-professional design stakeholders. Open to partnerships with the humanities and social sciences, they will implement original research methods that may involve experimental and/or field approaches. Through their research, the successful candidate will contribute to the development of design sciences and design methods adapted to a rapidly and significantly changing context. Their work may range from methods and support for new collaborative practices in open environments (maker spaces, grassroots groups, start-ups, etc.) to digital environments and associated product models for the renewal of industrial practices. The successful candidate's ability to forge partnerships with economic stakeholders will be a valuable asset.

They will be able to rely on and contribute to the development of the Vision-R platform, which incorporates the latest extended reality (XR) technologies, foreshadowing the technologies that will shape the future of design offices.

They will also be called upon to participate to the life of the CCI team.

Information for candidates:

  • Université Grenoble Alpes recruits on the basis of skills and makes use of all talents. It encourages applicants with disabilities to apply for teaching and research positions.
