The Opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi
This is a senior business partnering role where you will work closely with budget holders and senior leaders to provide high quality financial advice, insight and analysis. You will play a critical role in enabling informed decision making, driving financial sustainability, and supporting AUT’s strategic objectives.
Reporting to the Head of Finance, you will also deputise when required and provide leadership to management accountants and assistant management accountants within your portfolio.
Key responsibilities
- Provide professional, objective and commercially focused finance business partnering and advisory services
- Manage month end processes, including journals, salary allocations, reconciliations and management reporting
- Deliver high quality financial performance reporting, analysis and predictive insights
- Support budgeting, forecasting and annual planning cycles, including capital expenditure planning
- Undertake project appraisal and cost benefit analysis.
- Maintain and improve financial systems, processes and internal controls
- Lead, mentor and develop management accounting staff and support financial capability across the University

About you | Ko wai koe
We seek an individual who balances assertiveness with humility, demonstrates initiative, and consistently exercises reliable judgment across diverse financial tasks. You will have:
- CA qualification (or equivalent) with 7+ years post‑qualification experience in financial accounting, audit, or a commercial finance environment within complex organisations
- Extensive management accounting experience in large, complex organisations, ideally within the tertiary or public sector environments.
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting standards, NZ public sector accounting requirements Experience with high‑end ERP solutions
- Advanced analytical, spreadsheet, and financial management skills
- Excellent communication, relationship‑building, and problem‑solving capabilities
- Proven people leadership capability and experience developing high performing teams
- You will be someone who thrives under pressure, enjoys juggling multiple priorities, and is committed to integrity, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
