Job Description
The Senior Power Plant Technician works under close supervision of the General Maintenance Supervisor and performs duties in the operation, maintenance and service of boilers, chillers and other related equipment.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Check gauges to see that boilers are functioning properly at the required level.
- Operate valves and adjust regulators to control flow of steam or water.
- Operate valves to remove sludge and scale from pressure system.
- Perform maintenance/repairs to a wide variety of HVAC equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance on a wide variety of HVAC equipment to include hydronic heating and cooling equipment and compressor-operated heating and cooling equipment.
- Maintain and clean boiler room.
- Assist in performing service work on boilers when necessary.
- Mix boiler and cooling tower chemicals.
- Must wear proper PPE (safety shoes, hearing and eye protection) as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
- Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, the University community and the public.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to effectively service and maintain pipes, valves and gauges on boilers.
- Ability to effectively maintain boiler operations at desired level.
- Ability to accurately mix chemicals.
- Ability to effectively use a variety of hand tools and testing equipment.
- Ability to work inclement weather duties.
Physical Requirements
- Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Bending, twisting and lifting weights to 100lbs.
- Heights and working on elevations of 60 feet.
- Work off ladders and lifts.
Required Minimum Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent.
- Must be available for unexpected shift coverage or emergency conditions.
- Knowledge and experience in boiler operations, repairs, chemicals as used in boilers, cooling towers and chill water systems.
- A minimum of two (2) years of previous mechanical, maintenance, electrical or other appropriate work experience in the trades may be substituted for the required boiler operations experience; however, a training period in boiler operations will be required if a substitution is made.
- Valid driver's license.
- A background check will be required of the successful applicant.
