The role | Te mahi

We are seeking to appoint a permanent full-time Senior Professional Practice Fellow in Secondary Education; our hope is to attract candidates who can teach from an integrated curriculum perspective. The successful candidate would ideally bring special expertise in Science, Arts and/or Social Science curriculum areas in the secondary education sector. Flexibility in teaching in a variety of areas of the curriculum is highly desirable.

Responsibilities of the role include:

•    Supporting teaching in the Master of Teaching and Learning, and Graduate Diploma of Teaching degrees. This includes preparation, assessment, teaching and paper administration duties under the supervision of the course coordinators and programme coordinators (Secondary/GradDipTchg).

•    Supervising students on professional experience placements.

•    Contributing to whanaukataka on campus, and the College’s academic goals by applying and sharing expert knowledge in the professional discipline of education.

•    Upholding the values, tikaka (processes), kawa (rules) and mana of papatipu rūnaka who have mana whenua status in our takiwā, and affirming te reo and mātauraka Māori in course content.

•    Upholding and giving effect to the values and aspirations expressed in the University’s Māori Strategic Framework 2030 and Pacific Strategic Framework (2022-2030).

•    Consulting and working with the College of Education Associate Deans Māori and Pacific and with other staff to ensure courses develop students’ cultural confidence and competence.

You will be supported by a collegial academic environment, an active and dynamic research culture, and by efficient professional services across the University. The opportunity exists within this position to pursue doctoral study at the College of Education.

Skills and experience | Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

To be successful in this key role, you will have:

•    Relevant professional qualification in teaching.

•    New Zealand teacher registration and current full practising certificate.

•    A Master’s level qualification (preferred).

•    Ability to teach pedagogical content knowledge related to the Science, Social Science, and/or Arts learning areas of the New Zealand curriculum.

•    Relevant professional experience in secondary school curriculum and/or pertinent to the education of secondary school students.

•    Experience and expertise in Māori/Pacific education is desirable.

•    Expertise in te reo Māori is desirable.

•    Evidence of an ability to work well with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds.

•    A demonstrated commitment to upholding the articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and to equal opportunity.

This is a full-time (1FTE), permanent position available from 29 June 2026 based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.

The appointment range for this role is $105,665 to $137,444 per annum depending on skills and experience.
