The role

This Horizon Europe funded project (eVTOLUTION) aims to demonstrate a range of novel technologies applicable to the propeller aerodynamic and aeroacoustic design. It focuses on developing suitable experimental and numerical tools to improve the design and evaluation processes for the next-generation propellers, dedicated to electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles for Urban Air Mobility applications.

The project provides a unique opportunity to work closely with industrial and academic partners, including GKN-UK and Vertical Aerospace, to make a tangible impact to the UAM community, contributing to future, sustainable aviation. You will be joining a team of highly motivated researchers across Europe. The University of Bristol is a home to the UK National Wind Tunnel Facilities, including facilities specifically designed for propeller aerodynamics and aeroacoustics.

As a successful candidate, you will design new test rigs and will coordinate the fabrication process. You will also lead the test rig instrumentation for wind tunnel testing. This is a time-critical task, requiring the individual to demonstrate strong project management skills and prior knowledge of experimental aerodynamic measurement techniques. Please note that, due to operational requirements, we would like the successful applicant to start in post preferably by August 2026 or soon after.

What will you be doing?

You will be responsible for designing and manufacturing of test set-ups and provide technical assistance team's members during the course of the project. You will liaise with project partners and team members at the University of Bristol to collect design information and communicate with manufacturing teams at the University of external suppliers to deliver the new test rigs in time for wind tunnel testing by the team.

You should apply if

  • Have an MEng/MSc or PhD (not essential) degree in aerodynamics/a related field or equivalent professional qualification/experience or are working towards one
  • have experience and good knowledge in aerodynamics, fluid mechanics and wind tunnel testing
  • have strong experience of PIV, Hotwire CTA and pressure measurement techniques and relevant post-processing techniques
  • have extensive data post-processing and analytics skills using Matlab, python or similar programming language
  • Have a strong experience of using design software and fabrication tools, such as CNC
  • Have strong project management skills
  • are able to start in post preferably by August 2026 or soon after
