The Institute of Art History (IAH) www.ipu.hr, based in Zagreb with a branch in Split, is a public research institution dedicated to the study of the history and theory of Croatian visual arts. A member of the International Association of Research Institutes in the History of Art (RIHA), IAH conducts fundamental and applied research and interprets and evaluates artistic phenomena, monuments and significant figures in Croatia within national, regional and European contexts.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must fulfil the criteria prescribed by the following legislation and institutional regulations:
- Act on Higher Education and Scientific Activity (Official Gazette No. 119/22): official text

The appointment procedure will be conducted in accordance with Article 40 of the Act on Higher Education and Scientific Activity.
Application Process
Applications may be submitted in Croatian or English. A signed application must be accompanied by the following documents:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- evidence of a doctoral degree in the required area and field (copy of the diploma)
- evidence of registration in the Register of Scientists and Artists, if the applicant is registered; the selected applicant must be entered in the Register before the employment contract is concluded
- information and supporting documentation demonstrating fulfilment of the National Criteria, including appropriate library certificates concerning bibliometric data, where applicable
- a list of scientific publications classified according to the categories prescribed by the National Criteria, together with the relevant evidence
- full texts of scientific publications being evaluated for the first time in this appointment procedure (PDF) or links to publicly accessible full texts
- reports of expert committees from previous appointment procedures concerning publications evaluated in those procedures, where applicable
- information demonstrating fulfilment of the Institute’s additional requirements for appointment to research positions, stated separately in the application
- a list of projects in which the applicant has participated, specifying the type of project, period of participation and the applicant’s role
- a summary of the applicant’s research activities to date
Applicants who obtained their higher education qualification abroad must submit an opinion of the Croatian Agency for Science and Higher Education (AZVO) on the assessment of the foreign higher education qualification, or confirmation that the assessment procedure has been initiated. In the latter case, the AZVO opinion must be submitted no later than the date on which the employment contract is concluded. Foreign citizens are required to have a basic knowledge of the Croatian language.
Submission and Deadline
Applications and supporting documentation must be submitted by Monday, 12 October 2026, at 23:59 (Central European Summer Time), in electronic form (PDF) to ured@ipu.hr
The email subject line must read: “Call for applications – 2, Senior Research Associate, Research Unit for Medieval Art”.
If the documentation exceeds standard email size limits (for example, more than 25 MB), it must be submitted using a large-file transfer service. The sender must ensure that the download link remains active for at least seven days from the date of submission.
Requirements
Research Field: History » Art history
Education Level: PhD or equivalent
Specific Requirements: Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in the humanities, in the field of art history, and fulfil the requirements for appointment to the position of Senior Research Associate prescribed by the applicable Croatian legislation, the National University, Scientific and Artistic Criteria and the Institute’s Regulations on Additional Requirements for Appointment to Research Positions. Foreign applicants must have a basic knowledge of the Croatian language.

Employment Conditions
Employment is permanent and full-time, subject to mandatory reappointment or appointment to a higher research position in accordance with the Act on Higher Education and Scientific Activity.
The salary will be determined in accordance with the selected applicant’s qualifications and the applicable Croatian legislation.
