Job Description
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Missouri S&T seeks qualified individuals for a position of Senior Research Associate to work on projects related to flight testing of prototype hardware. This role will interact frequently with several project personnel as well as MAE’s electronics technicians and machine shop personnel in the design, development, integration, and installation of several lunar regolith processing systems for flight testing in related lunar environments such as reduced gravity and vacuum.
Technical Duties
Equipment Design and Development
- Collaborate with faculty and students on the design and development of research experimental equipment, involving significant mechanical and electrical design work
- Interface with flight providers regarding payload requirements according to respective Payload User Guide (PUG)
Installation and Setup of Equipment
- Manage the installation and implementation of research equipment to support project and proposal needs
Software and Field Support
- Provide LabVIEW support (installation and programming) for equipment testing and data acquisition
- Provide technical assistance for special project events (e.g., transportation of large project equipment/container, field trip to flight testing locations)
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications - Required Skills
- Master’s Degree or higher in Engineering field
- Extensive experience in design and integration of multiple technologies including: Electronics, Automation systems, Data acquisition and control systems, Gas handling / vacuum systems, Mechanical motion systems
- Fluency in design software such as NX or SolidWorks
- Fluency in LabView data acquisition software
- Clear communication skills with work order process with MAE’s technician team
Preferred Skills or Experience
- Experience on NASA projects interacting with NASA teams and flight provider teams (parabolic flights and/or suborbital flights)
- Familiar with developing Concept of Operations (ConOps) based on Payload User Guides of flight providers
- Experience of parabolic flight testing as either a flyer or ground personnel
