Senior Research Fellow (Peace and Security)

Job Description

The Centre for International Law (CIL) was established in 2009 as a university-level research institute at National University of Singapore (NUS). CIL engages in both legal and multi-disciplinary research on a wide variety of international law issues. Its mission is to enable Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region to play a more significant role in the promotion and development of international law. CIL's vision is to become a regional intellectual hub and thought leader for research and teaching in international law. Further information about CIL is available at https://cil.nus.edu.sg/

CIL invites applications for the position of Senior Research Fellow. This two-year contractual appointment supports the expansion of the Centre's Peace and Security Programme and aims to enhance the research capabilities of emerging scholars by providing a dynamic and supportive academic environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct high-quality research on issues related to peace and security, with particular emphasis on states’ conduct in cyberspace, autonomous weapons systems, and international humanitarian law (IHL).
  • Produce and publish research in leading peer-reviewed journals.
  • Develop and deliver courses within the field of peace and security, including those addressing cyber operations, emerging military technologies, and the application of IHL.
  • Assist in the organisation of seminars, workshops, conferences, and related academic events.

CIL provides its research staff with extensive professional development opportunities through NUS events, seminars, and training programmes. Staff members also have opportunities to participate in regional and international academic engagements, including conferences, workshops, and symposiums.

Qualifications

  • A PhD in Public International Law with a minimum of three (3) years of postdoctoral research experience;
  • A demonstrated record of research excellence, evidenced by high-quality scholarly publications;
  • Proven capacity to conduct independent research in the field of peace and security within international law; including expertise in states’ conduct in cyberspace, autonomous weapons systems, and IHL.
  • A strong record of journal publications or book chapters in international law is highly desirable;
  • Excellent command of English, proficiency in an additional language is considered an asset.
