About the role

As the Senior Research Fellow, you will play a central role in managing and advancing the laboratory and pre-clinical research agenda of the QRC-PVD. Working closely with the Director and research leadership team, you will oversee laboratory operations, supervise research staff and students, and contribute to both pre-clinical and clinical studies—including major clinical trials and the Peripheral Vascular Biobank.

You will lead complex research activities, support ethics and governance submissions, prepare high-quality publications, and contribute to grant development and new research protocols. This position also offers opportunities for professional engagement, collaboration across disciplines, and meaningful impact on health outcomes in rural, remote and underserved communities.

What you’ll do

  • Conduct high-impact laboratory and pre-clinical research, including animal models, molecular biology and histology techniques.
  • Contribute to clinical research and clinical trials conducted within the centre.
  • Supervise and mentor research staff, HDR candidates and Honours students across the clinical and pre-clinical teams.
  • Oversee laboratory studies, sample storage, research reporting and project progress.
  • Prepare publications, grant applications, ethics submissions and project documentation.
  • Strengthen the research culture and academic output of the QRC-PVD and affiliated groups.
  • Engage with professional networks, conferences and seminars to enhance research impact.
  • Uphold JCU’s values, commitment to reconciliation and sustainability, and ensure safe and ethical research practices.

About you

You will be an experienced and independent researcher with:

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., biomedical science, medicine, cardiovascular research) and significant research experience (10+ years).
  • Deep knowledge of laboratory and animal research methodologies, including NHMRC ethics requirements.
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage complex research projects and publish high-quality outputs.
  • Strong organisational, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience supervising staff and students in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • (Desirable) Advanced research design or statistical analysis skills and experience leading diverse research teams.
