James Cook University is seeking a Senior Research Officer, Community Engagement to support the delivery of FNQ Connect — a transformative collective impact initiative strengthening disability and rehabilitation services across Far North Queensland.

Based at The Cairns Institute, this role works at the heart of community-led change. You’ll collaborate closely with communities across Kowanyama, the Tablelands and Cairns, ensuring lived experience, cultural knowledge and local leadership shape decision-making and outcomes.

About the role

Working as part of the FNQ Connect Backbone Team, you will support community engagement, coordinate place-based projects and guide action learning alongside Community Champions and Action Groups. Your work will ensure community voices are central to evaluation, learning and continuous improvement, and that culturally responsive, inclusive practices underpin all engagement activities.

You will also contribute to high-quality reporting, presentations and knowledge sharing, represent FNQ Connect at forums and events, and support the initiative’s long-term sustainability through funding and policy-related work.

About you

You are an experienced community-engaged researcher or practitioner with strong facilitation and relationship-building skills. You bring a deep commitment to culturally safe practice, experience working alongside Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities, and a passion for place-based approaches that translate evidence into action.
