The Department of German Studies at the University of Vienna is the largest research and teaching center in Austria, covering the fields of German language and German-language literatures. The core areas are Modern German Literature, Medieval German Language and Literature, Germanic Linguistics, German as a Foreign and Second Language, and German Teaching Methodology. In addition, the areas Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, Literary Theory, and Literature for Children and Young Adults are well established.

Your personal sphere of play:

The position advertised here, is within the field of German as a Second Language. The work-group German as a Second Language (Deutsch als Zweitsprache) is led by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Inci Dirim. Here you can expect a small, dedicated team with a friendly work environment. The primary focus of the position is to support the "The speech action of multilingually socialized children in the institution of kindergarten" project in which the colleage being replaced is working. This involves processing oral language data from children and adults who speak German and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, and Slovak. Therefore, a high knowledge of these languages is desirable. The position offers the opportunity to gain research experience in this area. Furthermore, you are expected to support ongoing activities within the department, such as organizing examinations. Shoud the positon be extended, you would also be expected to undertake some teaching. Last but not least, you will be expected to participate in team activities such as joint meetings.

The advertised position is for maternity leave cover until 30.06.2026 with the option of extension.

Your future tasks:

Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:

• Participation in research, teaching & administration
• Participation in the FWF research project "The speech action of multilingually socialized children in the institution of kindergarten"
• Participation in publications / academic articles
• Participation in the organisation of conferences, meetings, smposiums
• Participation in evaluation measures and in quality management
• Administrative tasks within the department
• You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement
• Supervision of master´s theses and participation in oral examinations
• Supervision of students

This is part of your personality:

• Completed doctoral/PhD studies in the field of German as a Second Language and Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian or Slovak
• Experience in research
• Focus on Linguistics
• Excellent knowledge of German
• be highly skilled in expressing him or herself both verbally and in writing
• IT user skills
• Ability to work in teams
• Research experience

Desirable qualifications:

• Research experience in the field of bilingualism in German and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian or Slovak
• Experience in processing oral language data
• High knowledge of Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian or Slovak

Fixed-term contract and fair salary:The basic salary of EUR 5.014,30 (14 times a year for senior scientists postdoctoral) for a period of 4 months increases, if we can credit professional experience.
