Senior stem cell lab technician

Applications are invited for the role of Senior stem cell lab technician to join the vision research group within Clinical and Experimental Sciences (CES) at the University of Southampton.

You should have extensive laboratory expertise in cell biology and human tissue culture. The role includes extensive work with human pluripotent stem cells and so previous experience and expertise with CRISPR/Cas9 technologies in addition to laboratory leadership would be an advantage. For example some work will include reprogramming hiPSC derived from patient fibroblasts and retinal organoid cultures. You should be a highly motivated candidate, capable of independently designing and carrying out experiments as well as intellectually contributing to the projects and managing multiple workstreams to achieve their goals in a timely manner. You should be interested in the interface between lab-based research and clinical research and ideally have a track record of publishing in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals.

The vision group investigates various aspects of paediatric and adult eye disease from very clinical projects to lab based and genetic studies in-house with multiple collaborations between PI’s in the vision research group. This role is to support those aspects of projects related to stem cell work. Importantly, this includes regular but minimal weekend maintenance work and covering other staff duties where necessary. Hence, this exciting role offers the opportunity to work at the interphase of cutting-edge, multidisciplinary research on multiple ophthalmic disorders. You will join a vibrant and dynamic research group and be expected to work as a team with other postdocs, PhD/undergraduate students, clinician scientists and technicians as part of the wider vision research group. You will collaborate with colleagues across Faculties of Medicine and Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton and colleagues in other institutions. The candidate can expect a collegial and research-focused environment with mentoring and career development support from the line manager Jorn Lakowski and the other vision groups PI team.

The post is available for a period of 2 years in the first instance. Interviews for shortlisted candidates are likely to be held in March/April 2026. Informal inquires may be directed to Dr. Jorn Lakowski (J.Lakowski@soton.ac.uk).
