Senior Technician Jewellery
As a Senior Technician in our growing team at Birmingham City University, you will work closely with academic colleagues to shape the delivery of practical hands-on learning experiences for students on specialist programmes.
We have four positions available, each focused on supporting students in the production of high-quality outcomes and maintaining safe and efficient working environments in workshops, labs, and studio spaces. There is a strong emphasis on demonstrations, skill delivery, and technical training.
Candidates should have significant knowledge in one of the following areas:
- Jewellery Making: Excellence in craft, material experimentation, silversmithing, traditional bench skills, stone setting, laser welding, and polishing.
- Jewellery Machining: Expertise in equipment such as lathes and milling machines with a jewellery or horology focus, including maintaining traditional workshop machinery.
- Jewellery CAD/CAM: Strong knowledge of digital design and making processes, including software like SolidWorks, MatrixGold, Rhino, 3D printing, and CNC processes.
- Jewellery Processes: Knowledge of hazardous processes such as plating, casting, and enamelling, with understanding of COSHH and safety procedures.
Responsibilities include training students through 1:1 instruction and group demonstrations, maintaining equipment, ordering materials, championing sustainable methods, managing bookings, creating health and safety documentation, and using specialized software.
Essential experience:
- For Jewellery Machining: Proven experience operating and maintaining manual engineering machinery like lathes and milling machines.
- For Jewellery CAD/CAM: Advanced knowledge of 2D and 3D design software such as SolidWorks and Rhino for technical drawings and models.
- For Jewellery Making: Proven experience producing high-quality jewellery using traditional bench skills.
- For Jewellery Processes: Strong practical knowledge of casting techniques including wax preparation, mould making, and metal melting.
