"Senior Workshop Technician"

Applications are invited for the post of Senior Workshop Technician in the Department of Earth Sciences. This is an exciting and varied role, where the post holder will support academic staff and students carrying out research projects using the High Temperature laboratory and rock cutting/polishing facilities and provide training in the safe use of these facilities. The post holder will be responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of bespoke instrumentation for research projects from nano-scale parts to full and complete rigs, able to design and build prototypes and produce a finished product using a variety of technical skills and equipment. The Senior Workshop Technician will also be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the mechanical workshop, rock cutting and polishing facilities, including managing one member of staff and be responsible for the safe operation of those facilities. The position reports to the Building Services and Workshop Manager and supports the Building Services and Workshop Manager with the day-to-day operations of the Downing Site for both the teaching and research activities of the department. The post holder will be expected to take on the duties of the Building Services and Workshop Manager, in the event of absence or holiday. The position involves working closely with a wide range of Departmental staff and students and engaging with the University Estates Division, the Safety Office and University Security team, as well as external contractors, as necessary. The role holder will have proven organisational skills, have a high attention to detail and be able to effectively prioritise their workload. Practical experience of specialised laboratory activity and equipment is required, as well as experience in instrument making or light engineering and working with specialist materials with competency in the use of mills, lathes and welding equipment. Previous experience in workshop activity is required, and experience in managing workshop-based staff is desirable. A working knowledge of relevant regulations and practice including health and safety is also essential. Out of hours work may occasionally be necessary. Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
