Sessional Assistant Professor in Film Production

The Department of Cinema & Media Arts in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design at York University invites highly qualified applicants for a Sessional Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream position in Film Production, with a focus on Sound Production and Sound Post-Production. This is a Contractually Limited Appointment (CLA) to the teaching stream for a two-year term to commence July 1, 2026.

We seek a colleague to teach both practical and theoretical courses in sound at all levels of film and digital production and post-production, including, but not limited to, the aesthetics of sound and music, location and studio recording, sound design and editing, and sound mixing. The successful candidate will pair a creative mindset with a deep understanding of global storytelling through sound and other elements of post-production and show evidence of being able to guide students in creating compelling sound designs and narratives for diverse forms of film and media.

The successful candidate should also be able to teach introductory undergraduate and graduate production courses in fiction, documentary and/or alternative/experimental filmmaking, with the capacity to mentor students through each stage of project development. Coordinating equipment as per pedagogical needs is an essential requirement of the position, and the ability to engage in curriculum design and development is considered an asset. Candidates are expected to stay updated on industry trends in film sound and post-production, ideally with knowledge of diverse cultural contexts. Candidates are also expected to contribute to service through membership on some committees.

The Department of Cinema and Media Arts is Canada’s first and foremost film school with four specialized streams of undergraduate study—Film Production, Cinema & Media Studies, Screenwriting, and Media Arts—alongside MA, MFA, and PhD graduate degrees, all taught in excellent production facilities, with strong connections to industry as well as independent film and media arts community organizations, backed by a stellar faculty of internationally renowned filmmakers, screenwriters, media artists and scholars.

Empowered by a welcoming and diverse community with a uniquely global perspective, we are preparing our students for their long-term careers and personal success. Together, we can make positive change for our communities, our planet, and our future.

We are particularly interested in colleagues who bring experience in facilitating equity, diversity and inclusion practices within their teaching and that may include contexts outside of academia, including artistic praxis and community-based work. A record of professional experience collaborating with women, diverse sexual identities, IBPOC (Indigenous, Black, People of Colour) artists and communities would be considered a significant asset. York supports Indigenous research and education through its Indigenous Framework for York University, the Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Languages and the Indigenous Council.
