Carnegie Mellon University's department of Mechanical Engineering is searching for a Shop Monitor to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by overseeing the prototyping facilities located in TechSpark during open weekend hours. This role mentors and supervises students, faculty, and staff in the safe and effective use of various fabrication and prototyping equipment. They enforce access and safety protocols for tools and equipment use and assist undergraduate and graduate students with questions relating to fabrication, rapid prototyping, and woodworking. They are responsible for the opening and closing of facilities during scheduled times.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor student shop open hours to ensure safe operation of equipment
- Enforce access and safety protocols for tools and equipment use
- Mentor and supervise students in the safe and effective use of prototyping equipment including but not limited to 3D printing, laser cutting, wood working, hand tools, and power tools.
- Assist undergraduate and graduate students with questions relating to fabrication, rapid prototyping, and woodworking.
- Contribute to the maintenance and operation of fabrication shops to ensure a safe and efficient work environment
- Safely perform multiple duties, switching tasks as necessary to meet demand
- Cover weekend facility hours (Sunday and/or Saturday 12pm-6pm)
- Open and close facility on days scheduled
Qualifications:
- Expertise in the use of various prototyping equipment. Proficiency with but not limited to: 3D printers, laser cutters, woodworking equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
- Two or more years of relevant full-time experience working in a professional fabrication facility
- Associate's degree or Vocational training in fabrication or manufacturing related trade. Bachelor's degree preferred.
- A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
