About the Project
Skyrmions, and in particular torons, can be generated in chiral nematic liquid crystals by temperature variation, which can either be achieved by use of a hot stage or more precisely localised by laser irradiation. They are topologically protected solitons whose dynamics can be studied by electric field application. The project will consist of two interconnected parts, firstly the study of the dynamics of single (monomer) skyrmions in the presence of confined geometries provided by cholesteric…
fingers acting as walls, and secondly by investigating the dynamics of polyskyrmions (oligomers, polymers) of skyrmions varying in length. The latter can be monodisperse as well as polydisperse, depending on laser generation methodology. In the first part, it is anticipated to evaluate attractive and repulsive interactions between skyrmions. This can then be transferred to understand the dynamics of “polymerised” skyrmions, which qualitatively are similar to the motion of elongated bacteria or viruses, but also singular polymer chains. It is thus hoped to bridge the length scale from molecular to colloidal, thus contributing to the understanding of mesoscopic soft matter physics. The overarching aim is to develop a model system which is easily accessible and allows the study of molecular dynamic processes to dynamics relevant for the size scale of biological systems. Experimental results can then be compared to theoretical outcomes for example from polymer dynamics or bacterial motion.
The experimental methodology to be employed centres around time resolved polarised optical microscopy in combination with image acquisition and subsequent image analysis. The required equipment is available in our lab, which also covers the investigations of the first part of the study by hot stage changes of temperature. For the generation of polyskyrmions, there is an established methodology which can be carried out at the University of Oxford (Prof. Stephen Morris), with whom we have collaborated in the past. The student will we trained in concepts of soft matter physics and particularly also in liquid crystal physics and polarisation optics. Detailed support and training with respect to experimental aspects is available in the group via supervisors, postdocs and other PhD students. Training on the laser-based system is available through the group in Oxford. Potential comparisons by theoretical and computer simulations can be carried out in collaboration with the group of Prof Ivan Smalyukh at the University of Boulder, US, as has also been established before.
This project is expected to start in September 2027.

Funding Notes
Funding covers tuition fees, an annual stipend at the UKRI minimum rate (currently £21,805 per year), and a research training support grant of up to £2,500 per year for the full 3.5-year programme.
