Position Number: 00109986

Essential Job Duties:

  • The primary objectives of the SAIM residency are to develop clinical proficiency in internal medicine; gain experience in didactic and clinical teaching; and to complete one or more clinical research projects.
  • Board Certification in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine is expected after the end of the third year.
  • The SAIM residency program is highly structured and training is achieved via supervised case responsibility (internal medicine and other specialties), daily case rounds, intern/resident rounds, specialty medicine topic rounds, and the House Officer Seminar Program.
  • The clinical experience in internal medicine is outstanding due to a large and varied caseload and ample support from faculty with diverse clinical interests.
  • Residents participate in the clinical education of third and fourth year veterinary students and provide support for interns and the emergency service as needed after hours.
  • A generous amount of time is allotted to independent research activity, and one first author manuscript suitable for publication is required by the end of the residency program.

The North Carolina State University, College of Veterinary Medicine's Small Animal Internal Medicine (SAIM) residency program provides advanced clinical training in small animal internal medicine, which meets or exceeds the training requirements outlined by the ACVIM. Thrive Pet Healthcare (TPHC) owns and operates 370+ hospitals, offering a full spectrum of care in specialty, ER, urgent care and general practice across the United States, in 37 states. Our main Support Office is centrally located in Austin, TX, where we were founded by Dr. Jasen Trautwein. We combine this legacy and ongoing commitment to strong veterinary leadership with the expertise of our top-notch business professionals and private equity partner to add strategy and strength to the vision to create the world's most trusted, innovative, and connected pet health ecosystem.

Thrive is proud to deliver outstanding veterinary specialty medicine through a diverse mix of single-standing multi-specialty / ER hospitals across major cities as well as more suburban settings. We're also fortunate to have national single-specialty groups like Dermatology for Animals, Eye Care for Animals, Veterinary Cancer Group in Southern California, Arizona Veterinary Dental Specialists and PetCure. We have Thrive specialty hospitals in over 20 states currently and continue to explore new opportunities. Thrive is dedicated to our core values - empathy, service, accountability, exploration, team & joy - and sharing them with you as you build relationships with our teams. A key resource to facilitate this commitment is the members of our national Specialty Directors Board, whose members mentor, coach, and build community in their specialty across the country, with special attention to the journey of our House Officers.

As you near completion of your residency, we will explore open opportunities to join a Thrive hospital for your post residency period. We connect with you from the start of your residency to learn your thoughts about your best fit (medically, personally, geographically) in our diverse network of specialty hospitals. We accomplish that goal with several check-ins each year, voluntary out-rotations at our hospitals during your residency and networking at our annual Thrive House Office Symposium, and professional conferences. Our Director of House Officer Relations is a constant and committed touchstone along your journey. Either as a Thrive- or University Partner training veterinarian, we are here to help you be successful and be a supportive part of your future from day one.

Thrive-sponsored resident applicants must be able to secure United States work authorization upon the residency start date in the application, extending through the entire residency, as well as the post-residency employment obligation to the Thrive network.

We look forward to welcoming you into our growing and vibrant Specialty Community. To learn more and express interest, please contact houseofficerprograms@thrivepet.com.
