About the Department
MSU Denver's Department of Social Work prides itself on a richly talented faculty comprised of teacher-scholars who are highly dedicated to support undergraduate and graduate students in growing as social work scholars, practitioners, and leaders in the multitude of settings. MSU Denver faculty have expertise in culturally responsive practice that is relationally based. We are actively interrogating and revising our curriculum to reflect anti-oppressive practices while educating our students for the provision of effective social work services with diverse communities in micro, mezzo and macro settings serving vulnerable and underserved populations. We work to actively to engage in anti-racist practices in all aspects of our programming; faculty members are encouraged to actively engage in our aspirations to dismantle systems of oppression. While we seek demonstrated ability and experience teaching social work theory, practice, and/or research related courses, priority will be given to applicants with demonstrated commitment to MSU Denver's priority of serving underrepresented communities.

MSU Denver's Department of Social Work's has an undergraduate and graduate program in Social Work. Our mission is to prepare social workers to engage in skillful, ethical, justice-oriented, and effective practice in their communities. We accomplish this by:

  • Educating and training students to work with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities, including those who are members of historically excluded populations
  • Building community centered and strategic partnerships with organizations, co-creating relationship-centered learning and working environments to foster growth and collaboration
  • Utilizing the NASW Code of Ethics to inform teaching and practice, while adapting to changes in the field and world, drawing from a vast knowledge base informed by multiple perspectives

Position Summary
The Department of Social Work at Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver) invites applications for affiliate faculty teaching positions. We are seeking part-time, Social Work Affiliate Instructors for Content Areas of Research, Legal, and Policy across the curriculum as they relate to Social Work. All affiliate faculty in the department of social work will work with a Lead Faculty and participate in a content teaching team. When affiliate faculty are needed, they should expect to teach one to two courses each semester, the maximum any Affiliate Faculty can teach is three courses per semester. Responsibilities
An affiliate faculty member's duties may include but are not limited to: teaching assigned classes in person or online by delivering course content to students, preparing course materials and lesson plans, grading student work, providing students with robust feedback in a timely manner, addressing student questions consistent with university, college/school, and department policies, and providing online or in person academic support to students as needed and appropriate for the teaching assignment; providing instruction in assigned classes consistent with the content and learning objectives of the regular course syllabus and, if required, with department course coordination policies; adhering to department course coordination and Lead Faculty Model policies; and complying with university-wide student evaluation of instruction policies and peer observation policies. The ability to adapt and learn new modes of instruction is highly encouraged. Candidates need to be sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse student population.

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor degree, plus a minimum of two years of experience in legal areas relevant to social work practice, OR
  • A Master's in social work from a CSWE Accredited Program, plus a minimum of two years of relevant post MSW experience, OR
  • A Master's degree in related field, plus a minimum of two years of post master's experience related relevant to social work
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's of Social Work (MSW) degree from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) - accredited institution
  • Five years of relevant post MSW or related master's degree experience
  • PhD or ABD
  • Doctoral level course work in one or more content areas
  • Two years of teaching experience relevant to one or more content areas
  • Previous experience in teaching in an online environment
  • Experience with diverse, historically underrepresented and/or first-generation college students
Terms of Employment
Affiliate faculty are part-time, at-will employees hired to teach on a per credit hour basis for specific classes, usually on a semester-by-semester basis. Affiliate faculty are not eligible for benefit coverage under the University's benefit program. All such teaching assignments are dependent on budget and enrollment.

Qualified candidates will be expected to teach in person/on campus upon hire.

Salary for Announcement
The final salary is based on the number of credit hours assigned at a rate determined by university policy. For more information, please view pay rates under the College of Health and Human Sciences: Affiliate-Rates-AY-25-26
