SOCIAL WORK - ASSOCIATE/FULL PROFESSOR

Job Details

The College of Education and Social Services at the University of Vermont invites nominations and applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position in Social Work beginning in Fall 2026, at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. We seek someone motivated by the opportunity to contribute to the department’s mission to "promote social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people.” We are especially interested in applicants whose scholarship, teaching, and leadership reflect the department’s underpinning philosophy of transformative perspectives.

The University

Established in 1791, the University of Vermont is consistently ranked as one of the top public universities in the United States. Our academic programs combine faculty-student relationships, most often found in a small liberal arts college with the resources of a major R1 institution. UVM’s tradition of equity and social justice extends not only to faculty, staff, and students, but also is reflected in a commitment to environmentally sound and sustainable practices.

The College

The mission of The College of Education and Social Services is to educate and prepare outstanding professionals in education, human services, and social work; engage in scholarship of high quality; and provide exemplary professional service to Vermont, the nation, and the world. We do this to contribute to a more humane and just society, free from oppression, that maximizes human potential and the quality of life for all individuals, families and communities.

The Department

The Community

UVM is located in Burlington, Vermont, which is rated as one of the best small cities in the country. The greater Burlington area has an increasingly diverse population of about 125,000 and enjoys a panoramic setting on the shores of Lake Champlain, between the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. The surrounding area provides an environment rich in cultural, civic, and recreational activities. Vermont has a deep history of social activism and political participation. It offers many opportunities for collaborative partnerships in community and state-wide human service and social change organizations in multiple fields of practice, including state agencies.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will assume a range of responsibilities that include:

  • Maintaining an active program of research and scholarship activities that are complementary to the mission of the department and demonstrating rigorous publication and presentation in peer-reviewed scholarly outlets. We seek candidates with a record of extramural funding and/or strong capacity to obtain future funding.
  • Demonstrating excellence in undergraduate or graduate teaching and advising, with the possibility to advise graduate students with relevant research interests from other programs;
  • Engaging in professional service within the department, college, university, and profession.

Qualifications:

  • MSW degree and 2 years post-MSW practice experience;
  • Doctoral degree in Social Work or a closely related discipline;
  • Demonstration of commitment to the values articulated in UVM’s Our Common Ground: Respect, Integrity, Innovation, Openness, Justice, and Responsibility;
  • Knowledge of/interest in transformative perspectives;
  • Record of publication commensurate with rank and sufficient for tenure at UVM;
  • A record of external grant funding commensurate with rank and sufficient for tenure at UVM;
  • Evidence of teaching excellence at the undergraduate or graduate level; and
  • Strong collegial, communication, and collaborative teamwork skills.
