Job description

Faculty of Health and Life Sciences

The new full-time post is available from 1st September 2024 on a fixed term basis until 31st August 2030. We welcome applications from candidates interested in working part-time hours or job-sharing arrangements.

The post

We are recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate or Fellow with strong quantitative genomics skills, to join the Healthy Reproductive Ageing (HERA) study, an exciting, innovative, cross-institution research programme, funded by the Wellcome Trust.

HERA will generate a step change in our understanding of female reproductive ageing and ovary-centric disease through integrating findings from human population genomics with animal models, cellular phenotyping, organoid models and large-scale CRISPR screens. The biological and computational resources we generate will provide essential tools for the female reproductive health community in this under-researched field. The study will highlight novel biological targets with the potential to treat ovary-centric conditions.

The post will involve data-driven human genomics research, plus developing ideas and methods, collaborating with HERA partners in Cambridge, Copenhagen and London, writing papers, supervising more junior staff and students and developing further funding ideas.

The successful applicant will join a multi-disciplinary group of around 30 scientists working on complex trait genomics, based in Exeter. There is also the opportunity to spend up to 6 months at the MRC Epidemiology group in Cambridge, in the group led by Professor John Perry or the functional ovarian group in Copenhagen, led by Professor Eva Hoffmann. The project will have access to world-leading genomic resources and facilities and provide funding for attendance at: international conferences, training courses, career development opportunities and yearly retreats alternating between participating institutions.

About you

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD in a quantitative area and have experience of statistical and or computational approaches to large scale data, genetic analyses, and/or genetic epidemiology. The successful applicant at grade F will be an internationally recognised researcher in their field, as shown by highly cited publications, and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies, but applicants at an earlier career stage are also encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will be able to work collaboratively and supervise the work of others as required.

Please ensure you read the Job Description and Person Specification for full details of this role.

What we can offer you

  • Freedom (and the support) to pursue your intellectual interests and to work creatively across disciplines to produce internationally exciting research;
  • Support teams that understand the University wide research and teaching goals and partner with our academics accordingly
  • An Innovation, Impact and Business directorate that works closely with our academics providing specialist support for external engagement and development

  • A beautiful campus set in the heart of stunning Devon.
