About the programme
Research at the Department of Sociology is mainly theory-based empirical research with a clear connection to the surrounding community. Researchers at the department carry a long tradition of bridging the breakdown in "theory" and "empirical".
The research at Uppsala University covers key social phenomena such as identity, policy, social, and value. In doing so also issues of ontology and epistemology are brought into question.
Research areas represented by researchers and graduate students are: children's vulnerability, economic sociology, disability, organizational sociology, theory development, social gerontology, social psychology, and Urban Research.
Programme Structure
Research groups include:
Welfare Research Group:
- Focusing on inequality, health & social care and critical studies, this group's research is conducted in a range of national and international settings, and adopts various theoretical and methodological standpoints.
Cultural Matters Group (CMG):
- Cultural sociology is a broad international field, and holds at its heart a belief that culture as a system of meaning, materiality and practice is a sphere and a force that should be studied in its own right.
Emotion – Justice – Interaction (EmoJI):
- This research group engages in three themes that are central to social science research: Emotion, Justice, and Interaction.
- The research group aims to promote and conduct research on these themes separately and in conjunction, theoretically, empirically and methodologically.

General requirements
A person meets the general entry requirements for PhD Programmes if he or she:
- has been awarded a second-cycle qualification;
- has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle; or
- has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
