Sophia University, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Position in Accounting
Job Details
The Faculty of Liberal Arts (FLA) at Sophia University invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Accounting at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level. The Full-Professor and Associate Professor ranks are tenured appointments, while the Assistant Professor rank is a five-year tenure-track position.
The candidate is expected to have a PhD in Accounting, Business Administration, Management, or other related fields by September 1, 2026, with a record of scholarly publications and teaching experience appropriate to the rank. The new hire would complement the International Business and Economics (IBE) Area by adding expertise in fields such as financial accounting, management accounting, and other accounting areas. Practitioner experience would be an asset.
The successful applicant is expected to teach “Introduction to Accounting”, “Financial Accounting”, “Management Accounting”, and one more upper-level course in their area of expertise in the undergraduate IBE Area, as well as a graduate-level course in their area of expertise, such as “Financial Accounting” in the Graduate Program in Global Studies (GPGS). Alternatively, the successful candidate may be asked to teach an undergraduate-level data science course or a university-wide general studies course, as needed. The language of instruction is English. Competence in the Japanese language is desirable but not required. The teaching load is four courses in the first year (two/two), and five courses in the next year (two/three), on a two-year rotation. This teaching load includes one GPGS course per year. A course meets twice a week for one hundred minutes per class.
The successful candidate is expected to fulfill educational, research, and administrative duties in the FLA, GPGS, and the university, as well as to seek external research grants. We strongly prefer a candidate who can begin on April 1, 2027; however, under exceptional circumstances, a start date of September 21, 2027, may be considered. Sophia and the FLA are committed to promoting diversity. Female candidates are especially encouraged to apply. Teaching and administrative locations are subject to change as determined by Sophia University Corporation. Salary and benefits are based on Sophia’s rules and regulations.
Sophia University, located in central Tokyo, was founded in 1913 by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and is one of Japan’s leading private universities. The FLA offers a comprehensive program in the humanities, international business and economics, and social studies. In addition to our degree students, we annually welcome exchange students from leading universities overseas. We also staff the GPGS, which offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Global Studies and Japanese Studies, as well as an M.A. degree in International Business and Development Studies.
Applications should include a cover letter (outlining academic background, research interests, teaching experience/abilities, administrative experiences, and an explanation of your interest in Sophia University and living and working in Japan); a detailed curriculum vitae; two publications; the names, email and postal addresses of three referees; sample syllabi for Introduction to Accounting, Financial Accounting, Management Accounting courses, and an advance course in the applicant’s area of specialization.
Applications should be submitted online by February 28, 2026 (Japan Standard Time). To start the process, please create an applicant account by accessing the link here.
