Special Education Teacher
POSITION: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER- DEMONSTRATION TEACHER
SALARY: $63,833.23-$101,853.04
LOCATION: A. HARRY MOORE
Reports To: Building Principal and/or Supervisor of Pupil Services
Supervises: Students with disabilities in classroom and instructional settings; may supervise Teacher’s Assistants and paraprofessionals as assigned
Job Goal: To provide high-quality, individualized instruction that supports the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional development of students with disabilities, ensuring meaningful access to the general education curriculum and progress toward IEP goals.
Performance Responsibilities:
A. Instructional Leadership
- Plans, designs, and delivers individualized and small-group instruction based on IEP goals, state standards, and student needs.
- Implements evidence-based teaching strategies, including explicit instruction, task analysis, visual supports, and multimodal learning approaches.
- Adapts curriculum, materials, and assessments to meet diverse learning needs while maintaining high expectations for all students.
- Integrates assistive technology and communication devices to support student independence and engagement.
B. IEP Development and Implementation
- Leads or actively participates in IEP meetings, contributing data, progress reports, and recommendations for goals and services.
- Writes clear, measurable, and standards-aligned IEP goals and objectives.
- Monitors and documents student progress toward IEP goals and adjusts instruction accordingly.
- Ensures IEP mandates (related services, accommodations, placement) are implemented with fidelity.
C. Behavioral and Social-Emotional Support
- Collaborates with BCBAs, counselors, and support staff to implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and positive behavior supports.
- Teaches and reinforces social skills, self-regulation strategies, and executive functioning through direct instruction and embedded learning opportunities.
- Uses restorative practices, SEL curricula, and trauma-informed approaches to build a safe, supportive classroom community.
D. Collaboration and Communication
- Works closely with general education teachers, related service providers, and paraprofessionals to support inclusive practices and co-teaching models.
- Maintains regular communication with families through progress reports, conferences, and informal updates.
- Shares strategies and resources with colleagues to promote effective support for students with disabilities across settings.
E. Assessment and Data Management
- Administers formal and informal assessments to monitor academic and functional progress.
- Uses data to inform instructional decisions, groupings, and IEP revisions.
- Maintains accurate, confidential, and up-to-date student records in compliance with FERPA and district policies.
F. Professional Growth and School Engagement
- Participates in professional development to stay current with special education law, research, and pedagogy.
- Contributes to school-wide initiatives such as PBIS, MTSS, and inclusive education efforts.
- Models respect, empathy, and high expectations for all students, fostering a culture of dignity and belonging.
Qualifications:
- Holds a valid New Jersey Standard License with endorsement in Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TOSD)
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field; Master’s degree preferred
- Teaching experience or willingness to teach in special education, preferably in a K–12 inclusive or self-contained setting
- Demonstrated knowledge of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), IDEA, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), differentiated instruction, assistive technology, and evidence-based practices for students with autism, emotional disturbances, learning disabilities, and developmental delays
- Strong data literacy and experience using student performance data to inform instruction
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
- Commitment to trauma-informed practices, cultural responsiveness, and inclusive education
- Hours are 8am to 3pm
