Special Visiting Faculty in Costume Design
The School of Drama within the College of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University invites applicants for a one-year Visiting Special Faculty in the Costume Design Program, AY 2023-24.
We are the first drama degree-granting institution, having been established in 1914, and have a long, rich history of nurturing inventive artists at the forefront of the industry. The Costume Program at CMU is listed among the top ten in the world, and our alumni hold leading positions in performance design across the US and internationally.
The Costume Design Program prepares students for careers in theater, television and film, opera, dance, and emerging forms of entertainment. Under the mentorship of world-class faculty, emphasis is placed on developing the imaginations and visual skills of the individual artist as the foundations for collaborative creation. We combine established practice and innovative pedagogical and technological advancement across all subject areas with an intensive student-centered school production season. Artistic invention, design and visual art courses interwoven with making and craft courses, diverse art practices, interdisciplinary collaboration, new forms of creative expression and the promotion of community and diversity are among the hallmarks of our training.
Position Description:
The successful candidate would serve as an integral part of a five-person costume design and production team that work closely together within a dynamic, drama conservatory community. Courses taught during the academic year would be in dialogue with the current faculty but could include–First Semester: History of Clothing (from a global, multicultural, and broad socio-political viewpoint), Design for the Stage; Second Semester: History of Clothing, Basic Design-Semiotics, Introduction to Costume Design, Concept Character Illustration. These classes would be taught to both graduate and undergraduate students. Because of the immediacy of this vacancy, recent syllabi and support materials can be provided.

The teaching load will likely be 2:3
The hired candidate would be expected to advise student designers on up to 4 productions over the course of the year.
Professional experience is necessary; some teaching and an MFA are desirable.
Salary range: $65,000 to $70,000, plus benefits.
Position is for in-person & on campus instruction in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the AY 2023-24 term: August 2023 - May 2024.
