Specialist Associate (Aquarium Manager)

Job Description

A Specialist Associate is required to assist in the maintenance and management of Seawater Aquaria system at St John's Island National Marine Laboratory. These include new biosafety level 2 aquaria.

The primary job location is at St John's Island National Marine Laboratory. SJINML houses four research aquaria blocks which include seawater flume, controlled environment research experimental tanks, biosafety level 2 aquaria and open aquaria systems.

  • General maintenance of the SJINML facilities and infrastructure, including the maintenance of seawater pumps and aquaria systems, facilities and safety management.
  • Supporting researchers using marine aquaria – providing technical support, ensure safe conduct by researchers using the facility and proper housekeeping of the aquaria facility.
  • Day-to-day maintenance and checks of specialist aquaria facilities (BSL2 and animal research aquaria)
  • Perform animal husbandry, cleaning and decontamination procedures when required.
  • Responsible for reviewing safety risk assessments and plans for facility and aquarium research activities.
  • General admin work related to facility and Aquarium (Billing and Procurement)
  • Assisting Safety Coordinator on safety matters, documentation (WSHIR, EHS360, SHMS)
  • Help in outreach activities
  • Any other duties assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Minimum NITEC/ NTC 2/ Diploma in any relevant field preferably Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Mechatronic Engineering. Preferably must be able to read and interpret circuit drawings for electrical and electronics and manage basic plumbing.
  • Basic hands-on technical knowledge in electrical, mechanical and piping works.
  • Strong interest in marine biology and knowledge of Singapore marine life.
  • First aider experience and Class 3 driving licence would be useful.
  • Job location is St John's Island and travel to work includes ferry ride. Candidate must be able to swim. He/she should be prepared to work in offshore location.
  • As the job requires frequent interaction with students and researchers, good communication skills and a positive attitude is required.
  • Candidate should be self-motivated and able to work in a team.
