Background of the recruitment and description of the project
The Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), JAXA, recognizes efforts toward the discovery, tracking, physical characterization, orbital analysis and orbit evaluation, and assessment and mitigation of Earth impact risks of near-Earth objects (NEOs) as one of the key challenges in space science. Advancing this field requires individuals who can work across observational, space exploration and mission-related, theoretical, data science, and social implementation domains. It is also essential to promote research development in collaboration with domestic and international researchers and related institutions, leveraging the institute’s function as an inter-university research institute.

Work content and job description
The appointee will promote academic research on near-Earth objects (NEOs), including their observation, exploration, orbital analysis and orbit determination/evaluation, and Earth impact risk assessment, as well as data analysis and modeling related to these activities. In addition, the appointee is expected to emphasize collaboration with domestic and international institutions and researchers, and to contribute to academic research and related activities that support planetary defense.
After appointment, taking into account the appointee’s expertise and affiliated Department, the appointee will participate in the activities of the JAXA Planetary Defense Team. As necessary, the appointee may hold concurrent appointments and will contribute to the translation of academic outcomes into societal applications.
Detailed Job Duties and Desired Candidate Profile
In this call, we seek a Specially Appointed Assistant Professor (Tenure-track) who will promote academic research in one or more of the following areas: observation, exploration, orbital analysis, and risk assessment of NEOs, as well as data analysis and modeling related to these topics. The selected candidate is expected to grow into a leading researcher in this field. In particular, we seek candidates who are motivated to expand their expertise into this interdisciplinary domain while collaborating with domestic and international observation sites, universities, research institutions, relevant projects, and global planetary defense initiatives.

- Annual salary: 5 million yen
- Wages description: Salary will be determined under the provision of JAXA wage rules and regulations, considering qualifications and experience.

- Break time: 12:15-13:00
- Holidays: Saturdays and Sundays, National Holidays, New Year Holidays (December 29th - January 3rd), others when JAXA deems it necessary, etc.
- Overtime and other explanations: In principle, The Discretionary Labor System for Professional Work shall be applied. Working hours: basically 9:30-17:45. The break time: 45mins if the working hours a day exceed 6 hrs, and 1 hour if the working hours exceed 8 hrs. Regardless of the above those who apply The Discretionary Labor System for Professional Work shall have a deemed working time of 7 hrs and 45 mins a day. Overtime work may be required depending on the work situation.
