Job Duties:

The College of Letters and Science (L&S) is the heart of UW-Madison and home to a tremendous breadth and depth of departments and degree-granting programs in the humanities; natural, physical, and mathematical sciences; social sciences; and the computing, data, and information sciences. Join the L&S Research Compliance & Administration team in this Sponsored Programs, Grants & Contracts Compliance Manager role.

In this role, you will be responsible for leading and overseeing multiple areas of compliance for the college, including conflict of interest, conflict of commitment, outside activities reporting, and research compliance (export controls, effort/cost share, salary cap, data, human subject protocols and IRB, and research safety). You will work closely with pre- and post-award teams and with the Research and Sponsor Programs Office, and the office of the Vice-Chancellor for Research Policy and Integrity in central campus. With support from the individual hired to this role, L&S will continue to evaluate additional aspects of research compliance, such as animal care. Based on the outcomes of this evaluation, the scope of responsibilities associated with this position may expand over time.

This role is full time and will likely be a hybrid (partially remote) work schedule.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensures institutional compliance related, but not limited to: audit coordination, conflict of interest, intellectual property, and institutional review boards, export controls, effort, or other policies
  • Serves as a key resource to campus regarding research administration compliance areas and may supervise staff
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates policies and procedures related to compliance with federal, state, local, and/or university regulations
  • Undertakes additional duties or leads special projects as needed to support institutional compliance priorities
  • Assists principal investigators, researchers, administrative staff, leadership, and others to ensure institutional compliance with applicable regulations

Department: College of Letters & Science, Computer, Administration

Compensation: The typical starting salary for this position is $72,000 - $103,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor degree is required, an advanced degree is preferred
  • A minimum of 3 years of direct experience in administration of research compliance either through work at an R1 University, at a National Research Lab, at relevant funding agencies, or equivalent
  • Thorough understanding of policy, laws, and regulation and can determine when and how to apply them
  • Demonstrates integrity and high ethics in applying policy, while also having the ability to think creatively in circumstances where there isn't a clear solution
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and build positive working relationships with researchers and other administrative offices

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research Compliance experience at a Peer Institution, National Lab or Funding Agency

Education: Bachelor's Degree required.
