Sports Medicine Physician (Temp)
Job Summary
San José State University is pleased to announce an opening for a Sports Medicine Physician within the Student Wellness Center (SWC). As part of a dynamic team of healthcare professionals, the Sports Medicine Physician will provide specialized care in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and serve as a consultant to other medical providers within the SWC. This position reports to the Director of Health Services and plays an integral role in supporting student well-being, health equity, and academic success. In addition to direct patient care, the incumbent will provide primary care services as capacity allows and collaborate closely with campus partners, including SJSU Athletics and campus departments supporting student wellness.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate and treat traumatic and overuse injuries, including fractures, concussions, sprains, and strains
- Perform musculoskeletal ultrasound procedures and guide rehabilitation and return-to-play decisions
- Serve as a consultant to SWC clinicians and liaison to SJSU Athletics
- Provide primary care and sexual health services, including medication abortion care
- Supervise radiology procedures and serve as Radiology Supervising Physician as appropriate
- Participate in administrative duties, staff meetings, accreditation processes, and quality improvement activities
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of methods, procedures and practices; English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling
- Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports
- Thorough knowledge of current and advanced principles of general medicine and public health, knowledge of available community resources
- Demonstrated skills in diagnostic clinical decision-making and critical thinking
- Demonstrated ability to provide diagnostic treatment, and medical counseling services
- Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform patient care in functional areas to which assigned
- Working knowledge of ethics and standards of local and national medical associations and understanding local, state, and federal government regulations
- Working knowledge of software applicable to this position, such as medical record and scheduling software
- Skill in oral and written communication sufficient to communicate with both patients and SWC staff; possession of good customer service and public relation skills
- Ability to quickly assess emergency situations and take prompt action
- Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate an assigned, on-going clinical program
- Ability to prepare comprehensive case histories
- Ability to observe, listen to, and work with a diverse multicultural population of students and staff in a university community
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others
- Ability to handle multiple work priorities and appropriately organize and plan work and projects
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from a medical school
- License and Certification Requirements: Physicians - Specialty Services must possess and maintain:
- A valid license to practice medicine in the State of California
- Current board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) specialty or subspecialty appropriate for their assigned specialty duties
- A valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances
- Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties
- Completion of one or more residency programs and/or fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent in a specialty appropriate to their assigned specialty duties
Preferred Qualifications
- A valid California Department of Public Health-Radiologic Health Branch (CDPH-RHB) Supervisor & Operator Permit
- Two (2) years or equivalent of increasingly responsible experience in Sports Medicine
- Experience working with college populations (typically demonstrated through working with collegiate athletics programs and/or student health services)
Compensation
Classification: Physician – Specialty Services
Anticipated Hiring Range: $140/hour - $150/hour
CSU Salary Range: $83.19/hour - $161.90/hour
