Staff Research Assistant
Job Description
The Pioszak lab studies clinically important cell surface G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that are involved in diseases including migraine headache, cardiovascular and lymphatic disorders, osteoporosis, diabetes, and obesity. We are seeking a laboratory technician to conduct experiments on GPCR signaling mechanisms and drug design. We use the tools/methods of biochemistry, pharmacology, structural biology, and cell biology in our research. Much of the work involves in vitro experiments with purified proteins or cell culture systems.
Duties:
- Routine lab management tasks such as ordering supplies, record keeping, autoclaving, etc.
- Perform laboratory experiments to generate high-quality data that can be used in publications and grants. Techniques will include plasmid cloning, protein expression and purification, cell-culture and cell-based pharmacology assays (e.g. cAMP signaling), ligand-binding assays, etc.
- Perform basic lab calculations required for experiments such as concentrations, dilution factors, etc.
- Perform data analysis using software such as MS excel and GraphPad Prism.
- Keep a detailed lab notebook documenting your experiments.
- Assist other lab members with their experiments and help with training other lab members as needed.
- Present results in lab meetings in MS PowerPoint format.
- Provides assistance to a research staff by collecting data, keeping records, conducting literature searches, technical research, analyzing data, and preparing reports with minimal supervision.
- Conducts research and laboratory analysis for research staff, to include but not limited to measure and weigh compounds and solutions, isolate, identify and prepare specimens, and collect samples and other research information.
- Participates in clinical research projects collecting data from patients and/or participants in a study.
- Collects various forms of data pertaining to the research project or projects, which could include database information and/or hard files. Conducts data analyses, interprets data, draws conclusions, and discusses with principal investigator.
- Keeps detailed logs of all research related projects or activities.
- Conducts literature searches.
- Prepares various reports containing descriptive, analytical, and evaluative content that may be submitted for publication.
- Constructs tests or assists in the construction of tests.
- Collaborates with other researchers or colleagues.
- Participates in meetings and presents research findings to fellow researchers and Principal Investigator.
- Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
Job Requirements
Required Education: Bachelor's Degree in a Biological Science, Chemistry, Physical Science, Healthcare, Psychology, or related field. AND: 1 year of experience supporting research or working in a laboratory setting
Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months equivalent experience in lieu of the Bachelor's Degree for a total of 60 months research experience.
Skills: Working knowledge of how to safely handle and dispose of biohazardous materials or chemicals following Federal, State, and University regulations and guidelines. Detail oriented. Ability to analyze data and keep records. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
Certifications: None.
Working Conditions: Physical: Standing for prolonged periods. Manual dexterity. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Reaching, bending, and stooping. Environmental: Laboratory Environment. Exposure to biohazardous materials, chemicals, odors, and carcinogens.
Salary Range: Targeted salary range of $33,600-$43,700 dependent upon qualifications and experience. Benefits Provided: Yes. Required Attachments: Resume, Cover Letter.
