Job Description
This role supports the Standardized Patient (SP) Program at UMKC School of Medicine, coordinating simulations at the Clinical Training Facility (CTF) and partner locations across Kansas City and St. Joseph, MO. Standardized Patients are actors who portray patients so that learners can improve their clinical skills.
This role also provides hands-on support for manikin-based simulation events and includes responsibilities as an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Instructor. Travel to St. Joseph each month is required and is an essential part of the job; mileage is reimbursed per University policy. This position is not remote.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Administration
- Assist in scheduling and supervising a diverse team of Standardized Patients: including participation in hiring, onboarding, coaching, and performance management
- Serve as a point of contact for faculty, staff, and external partners regarding the program and SP needs
- Manage the SP program's administrative components (such as Canvas page), keeping training materials and event information up to date
- Stay current on best practices in simulation and SP-based education, including attendance at relevant conferences
- Match the right SPs to each scenario based on patient characteristics, learning objectives, and SP strengths and availability
Event Operations
- Plan and coordinate logistics for SP events.
- Provide hands-on support for event setup, breakdown, and AV/IT needs
- Create and maintain accurate event records in the learning management system (e.g., Elevate LearningSpace)
- Troubleshoot operational issues before, during, and after events, working closely with CTF staff
- Develop and refine program procedures to ensure consistent, high-quality event delivery
- Help identify and secure the supplies and resources needed for program success
Education, Assessment & Quality
- Collaborate with UMKC faculty to develop and support SP-based curriculum and case training
- Continuously improve existing SP scenarios and support the creation of new ones
- Observe and evaluate SP performances and provide constructive feedback and remediation as needed
- Maintain assessment tools and supporting materials for all SP exams
- Develop and deliver training resources for SPs, new hires, and faculty/staff
- Support SP-based research initiatives as needed
Reporting & Financial Support
- Assist in preparing usage and financial reports to support program planning and center-level decision-making
- Assist with development and monitoring of the SP Program's annual budget
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a related field (healthcare, education, public health, theater, or management), OR at least 2 years of relevant professional experience in a field such as healthcare, education, simulation, theater/arts, or program coordination
- Current AHA BLS Provider certification, or the ability to obtain one before the start date
- Ability to obtain AHA BLS Instructor certification within 6 months of hire
- Basic familiarity with medical terminology
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel regularly to St. Joseph, MO
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with Standardized Patients or in simulation-based education
- Background in acting, directing, or production (theater, film, or related fields)
- Prior experience supervising staff, coordinating programs, or managing operations
- Current AHA BLS Instructor certification
- Experience supporting manikin-based simulation (task trainers, high-fidelity simulators, etc.)
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and learning management systems such as Canvas
Anticipated Hiring Range
Anticipated Salary is $21.00 - $23.00 per hour commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity.
