Job Summary
The STEM Program Specialist serves as the primary operational lead for the K-12 STEM Pipeline Programming component of the Impact Through Engagement: Advancing Learning and Community Partnerships initiative, a Title III, Part B funded program at Albany State University (ASU). The Specialist serves as ASU's main liaison to local K-12 schools and community partners and is responsible for the full planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of hands-on summer enrichment camps focused on drones, robotics, coding, and health sciences for K-12 students of all backgrounds.
The Specialist plays a vital role in fostering a reciprocal learning environment that benefits both K-12 youth participants and ASU undergraduate students, reinforcing the University's role as a pipeline for talent and innovation in Georgia and beyond. The Specialist also works collaboratively with the Program Director, ASU faculty, and school partners to ensure that all STEM camp programming is rigorous, engaging, inclusive, and aligned with grant performance indicators and institutional goals.
Responsibilities
K-12 STEM Camp Planning and Development
- Serve as the primary operational lead for planning, developing, coordinating, and delivering all K-12 STEM summer enrichment camps.
- Design hands-on camp curricula across four STEM focus areas - drones, robotics, coding, and health sciences - ensuring content is age-appropriate, rigorous, culturally responsive, and aligned with high-demand career fields.
- Collaborate with ASU faculty to review and validate curricula for academic relevance and alignment with industry standards and workforce needs.
- Develop operational plans for each camp, including schedules, instructional frameworks, materials, safety protocols, and participant management procedures.
- Coordinate all camp logistics, including facilities, housing, equipment, technology, registration, transportation, and family communication.
- Ensure programming reflects ASU's commitment to equity, access, and inclusion, engaging students from all backgrounds.
- Identify opportunities to expand and diversify camp offerings in alignment with the program's strategic vision and emerging STEM fields.
- Ensure all camp activities comply with university policies, grant requirements, and safety regulations governing youth programming.
K-12 School and Community Partnership Development
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with local K-12 schools, districts, counselors, teachers, and administrators to recruit participants and build a sustainable STEM camp pipeline.
- Develop and execute an outreach strategy to recruit a minimum of 150 K-12 students per program cycle, with intentional focus on students from underrepresented groups with historically limited access to STEM enrichment.
- Serve as ASU's primary day-to-day liaison to K-12 school partners, maintaining consistent, professional, and culturally responsive communication throughout the program cycle.
- Coordinate with community organizations, youth-serving agencies, faith-based institutions, and civic partners to broaden recruitment reach and raise awareness of STEM college and career pathways.
- Support development of partnership agreements and MOUs with schools and community organizations.
- Represent the STEM Pipeline Programming component at school events, community fairs, parent sessions, and partner meetings to promote programming and build institutional relationships.
- Maintain detailed records of partnership interactions, outreach activities, and enrollment data to support grant reporting and program evaluation.
ASU Undergraduate Student Mentor Program
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a cohort of 20 ASU undergraduate student mentors to serve as camp instructors, near-peer role models, and student leaders.
- Develop and implement a mentor training program that prepares mentors to deliver STEM curriculum, support youth learning, and model professional, civic, and career success.
- Create structured opportunities for mentors to develop and demonstrate teaching, leadership, communication, and service-learning competencies through camp programming.
- Provide ongoing coaching and feedback to mentors throughout the camp cycle, fostering a reciprocal learning environment that benefits both mentors and youth participants.
- Coordinate with academic advisors, faculty, and student affairs professionals to recruit mentors from STEM-related disciplines, ensuring mentors reflect the diversity of ASU's student body.
- Design a mentor recognition and professional development framework that acknowledges contributions and connects camp service to academic and career goals.
- Evaluate mentor performance through structured feedback processes, compiling results to inform program improvement and grant reporting.
Camp Implementation and Discovery
- Oversee day-to-day implementation of all STEM camps, ensuring a safe, inclusive, high-quality learning environment for youth participants and mentors.
- Serve as on-site program administrator during camp sessions, managing supervision, staff coordination, scheduling, and real-time problem resolution.
- Facilitate hands-on STEM activities in drones, robotics, coding, and health sciences alongside mentors and faculty collaborators.
- Build early college and career awareness by connecting STEM activities to real-world careers, higher education, and ASU's academic programs.
- Incorporate age-appropriate college awareness components into each session, including campus tours, student/faculty panels, and career exploration.
- Coordinate family and community engagement opportunities, including parent sessions, showcases, and end-of-camp celebrations.
- Address participant needs, behavioral concerns, and safety issues promptly, in accordance with University policies and grant requirements.
Assessment, Data Management, and Reporting
- Design and administer pre- and post-camp assessment tools to measure outcomes, targeting 85% of participants reporting increased STEM interest.
- Collect and analyze camp data, including demographics, attendance, survey results, mentor feedback, and curriculum evaluations.
- Prepare camp outcome reports for the Program Director after each cycle, summarizing findings, feedback, and improvement recommendations.
- Maintain accurate records of participants, enrollment, attendance, partnerships, and expenditures per federal grant and University data policies.
- Contribute to federal progress reports, performance documentation, and institutional communications.
- Use assessment findings to continuously improve curriculum, mentor training, recruitment, and partnership strategies.
Faculty and Academic Collaboration
- Collaborate with ASU faculty in STEM disciplines - including but not limited to engineering technology, computer science, biological sciences, and health sciences - to align camp curricula with high-demand fields, emerging technologies, and academic program offerings.
- Facilitate connections between K-12 camp programming and ASU's academic units to create a visible and tangible pipeline from youth STEM enrichment to undergraduate enrollment and career preparation.
- Coordinate faculty participation in camp programming as guest instructors, workshop facilitators, career panelists, or curriculum advisors, ensuring meaningful faculty engagement in the K-12 STEM pipeline effort.
- Work collaboratively with the Program Manager for Community Engagement to identify cross-programmatic opportunities where STEM pipeline programming and wellness or civic engagement initiatives may intersect, creating integrated experiences that benefit both K-12 participants and ASU students.
- Participate in relevant academic department meetings, faculty forums, and institutional planning sessions to maintain visibility and advocate for the integration of K-12 STEM outreach into ASU's academic mission.
Administrative and Operational Support
- Assist the Program Director in monitoring the program budget, tracking expenditures for materials, equipment, mentor compensation, and participant support per Title III plans.
- Coordinate program scheduling, camp calendars, mentor schedules, and communication plans.
- Develop and distribute program materials, including recruitment flyers, parent communications, mentor handbooks, and participant guides.
- Participate in regular team meetings, contributing updates on planning, implementation, and outcomes.
- Support University-wide events related to the Impact Through Engagement initiative as directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Education, STEM-related discipline, Higher Education Administration, Public Administration, Youth Development, Health Sciences, or a related field.
- Candidates whose undergraduate training reflects a strong foundation in STEM instruction, youth program coordination, curriculum development, or community engagement are encouraged to apply, regardless of specific disciplinary title.
- A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience in STEM education, youth program coordination, K-12 outreach, camp administration, or a related area.
- Prior experience working on federally funded grant programs, including Title III or other U.S. Department of Education initiatives.
- Experience developing and delivering hands-on STEM curriculum in areas such as drones, robotics, coding, or health sciences.
- Knowledge of K-12 education systems, school partnership development, and student recruitment strategies.
- Experience administering pre- and post-program assessments and using data to drive program improvement.
