Job Description
The Student Advisor works with incoming, first-time college and transfer students, as well as students who are undecided in their major, to design a personalized educational success plan and identify available resources to facilitate the student's academic success. This includes admission, academic advising, career exploration, and transfer information. The Student Advisor may also make referrals to appropriate social service agencies for students experiencing personal and social problems.
This position collaborates with academic and other student service departments and disseminates information to part-time advisors. The Student Advisor provides advising in person, by phone, online, and/or electronically via email or real-time face-to-face interaction, and may serve on various College committees as appropriate.
This position requires a valid Nevada Driver's License, as some travel is required. Flexibility is required; this position primarily works Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., however, there may be the necessity to work or travel some evenings and weekends. This position is based at GBC's Pahrump Center in Pahrump, Nevada, and reports to the Pahrump Center Director.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- One year of relevant experience
- Ability to demonstrate a working knowledge of student advising
- Experience working with students of diverse backgrounds
- Ability to work through sensitive issues in a thoughtful, caring, professional, and confidential manner
- Knowledge of academic programs, student assessment, student services procedures, student "life" issues that may create a barrier to student success
- Articulate and can communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff
- Must possess a valid driver's license
- Ability to work some evenings and Saturdays as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provides initial academic and career advisement of incoming, traditional and non-traditional students who are undecided or are non-degree students
- Follows up with students who are struggling academically or behaviorally
- Provides academic advisement and career exploration in person, by phone, online, and/or electronically via email or real-time face-to-face interaction
- Identifies life issues that may be a barrier to a student's success and facilitates referrals to appropriate social service agencies for students experiencing difficulties with personal and social problems
- Spearheads various awareness programs (e.g., alcohol and drug awareness, anxiety, stress)
- Coordinates with part-time advisors in centers
- Consistently checks institutional web pages and catalog for inconsistencies
- Serves as a member of various institutional and system-wide committees as appropriate
- Maintains a valid Nevada Driver's License, as this position requires some travel (with or without accommodations per the Americans with Disabilities Act) throughout the state of Nevada and the region
- Other duties as assigned
Compensation Grade
Administrative Faculty - B
This is a 12 month "A" contract, 12 month contracts are used for year round programs.
The budgeted salary range for this position is $45,000 to $56,000. Salary is based on relatable education and experience, internal equity and budgets.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees
Great Basin College is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Dependents of faculty have unlimited credits, but in order to be eligible children must be unmarried and under the age of 24 and must receive at least 50% of their financial support from the employee and/or employee's spouse or domestic partner.
