Student Employee, Biology/Chemistry Lab Assistant Assistant
Job Description
The Biology/Chemistry lab assistant will assist with Biology/Chemistry laboratory prep by cleaning and maintaining laboratory equipment.

STATUS: Part-time
DEPARTMENT: Natural Sciences and Physical Education
DIVISION: Academic Affairs
REPORTS TO: Biology Lab Supervisor
CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt
Essential Job Duties
- Abide by Safety Procedures & Policies as detailed in the JJC Chemical Hygiene Plan
- Prepare laboratory materials for all Biology and Chemistry courses.
- Prepare media for Microbiology Labs, including; operating the autoclave & practicing aseptic techniques.
- Maintenance of aquariums, plants, lab animals and other living specimens.
- Maintenance of cadavers.
- Maintenance of laboratory equipment & supplies, including; cleaning, storage & inventories.
- Maintenance of classrooms and general lab clean-up.
- Prepare chemical solutions. Observe proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Work 10-20 hours per week, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 am to 4:00 pm
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Enrolled at JJC for 6 or more credit hours.
- GPA of 2.0 or above.
- Complete previous coursework in Biology and/or Chemistry
- Must be able to work well with others
- Must be able to communicate effectively
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence.
Preferred Qualifications
- English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.
- Demonstrated multicultural competence.

Working Conditions
Duties are performed indoors in the usual office and/or outdoor environment.
Scheduled Weekly Hours: This is a student employee position that works around your class schedule. May work up to 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. During summer and holiday breaks (Winter/Spring), may work up to 28 hours per week with supervisor approval.
