POSITION TITLE: Student Employee, Fitness Center Assistant
STATUS: Part time
DEPARTMENT: Natural Sciences and Physical Education
DIVISION: Academic Affairs
REPORTS TO: Fitness Center Coordinator
CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt
Hiring range: $15.00 per hour
(Position is FWS Eligible)
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage the check-in process and accurately record fitness center usage.
- Provide frontline customer service, including answering questions and assisting users.
- Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fitness center users.
- Monitor fitness center activities to ensure a safe environment.
- Enforce and abide by all fitness center policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
- Assist users with proper and safe use of fitness equipment.
- Identify and report safety concerns, incidents, or policy violations to the supervisor.
- Perform routine cleaning and sanitation of fitness equipment and facility spaces.
- Maintain organization of equipment, including weights, mats, and cardio machines.
- Conduct basic equipment checks and report maintenance needs or malfunctions.
- Ensure orderliness in fitness areas, classrooms, and related spaces.
- Wash, dry, and fold workout towels and facility linens.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- GPA of 2.0 or above.
- Must be enrolled at JJC in at least 6 credit hours.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Excellent Customer Service skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Attentiveness to detail, excellent organizational skills, initiative, and multitasking.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, demonstrating cultural competence and emotional intelligence
- Interest in fitness, wellness, or physical education.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule.
- Previous experience working in a fitness center, recreation facility, or customer service role.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.
- Demonstrated multicultural competence.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Moderate lifting required (e.g., moving weights, equipment, or supplies up to approximately 40 lbs).
- Ability to stand, walk, and remain active for extended periods.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Duties are performed indoors in a fitness center environment.
- Exposure to moderate noise levels and active recreational activity.
This is a student employee position that works around your class schedule. May work up to 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. During summer and holiday breaks (Winter/Spring), may work up to 28 hours per week with supervisor approval.
