Job Summary/Basic Function
The Student Employment Specialist manages compliance, program development, and student experience for the university's student employment program. This role promotes a "students first" philosophy by ensuring that campus jobs are not only a means of financial support but also key opportunities for experiential learning and future career preparation. This position ensures adherence to federal/state regulations (including Federal Work-Study), expands student employment opportunities through partnerships with on-campus vendors and community service organizations, and enhances the student employment experience through onboarding, orientation, and career-readiness initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and at least two years OR associate's degree and four years of related experience in student employment, human resources, payroll, or higher education administration.
  • Integrity and judgement necessary to maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student development and exceptional customer service.
  • Proven ability to act independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Experience with program development, student engagement, or experiential learning.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of federal and state student employment regulations.
  • Experience developing student-focused programming or training.
  • Understanding of experiential learning and career readiness models.
  • Experience in higher education or student services.

Essential Functions and percent of time

35% Regulatory Compliance & Program Management

  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, including Federal Work-Study (FWS), Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS), and institutional policies.
  • Partner with Financial Aid to manage FWS eligibility, placements, and fund usage.
  • Maintain records, audit documentation, and compliance reporting.
  • Expand FWS community service opportunities and coordinate with on-campus vendors to broaden employment options.

30% Student-Centered Experience & Program Development

  • Work with the Centers of Excellence in Talent and Training, as well as the Student Employment Coordinators to design and deliver onboarding and orientation programs for student employees.
  • Promote student employment as experiential learning aligned with career readiness competencies.
  • Collaborate with Career Services and academic units to integrate student employment into professional development pathways.
  • Lead student recognition initiatives, such as Student Employee Appreciation Week.

20% Support & Guidance for Supervisors and Students

  • Coordinate with the Student Employment Coordinators to provide guidance, training, and resources to supervisors and departments to ensure consistent understanding of student employment policies, procedures, and compliance requirements.
  • Develop and implement NACE Career Readiness Competency training for hiring managers and students.
  • Deliver workshops and develop resources that support mentoring and supervision of student employees.

10% Data, Assessment & Continuous Improvement

  • Collect and analyze student employment data to assess program effectiveness.
  • Provide recommendations to improve student employment processes and student outcomes.

5% Other Duties

  • Undertake other duties as assigned in support of HR and student experience initiatives.

Working Conditions
This position operates in a professional office environment, both on campus and in remote settings as needed. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional evening or weekend hours to support student programming or peak employment periods. The role requires regular use of a computer, phone, and other standard office equipment. The position may involve periods of sitting, standing, or walking.To preserve the safety and security of the campus community and to maintain the integrity of university operations, it is the policy of Wright State University making an employment offer contingent on various background checks, such as a criminal record, credit history when job related and/or education verifications.
