(Student Health) Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) serves as the primary care provider within Student Health Services (SHS) and must be qualified to practice independently. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the NP collaborates to deliver high-quality, student-centered care.
This role is responsible for providing comprehensive, developmentally appropriate primary care services to students, with an emphasis on health promotion, disease prevention, and overall well-being. The NP will also maintain responsibility for clinical documentation, care coordination, and billing for services provided within SHS.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide culturally responsive, inclusive care that affirms diverse student identities and supports diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Deliver comprehensive primary care using evidence-based practice, including: Conducting health histories and physical examinations; Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests; Diagnosing and managing acute and chronic conditions; Prescribing medications and treatments as appropriate.
- Emphasize health education, prevention, and wellness in all patient interactions.
- Collaborate with SHS and Counseling team members to ensure coordinated, high-quality care.
- Facilitate continuity of care through appropriate referrals to specialists and community resources.
- Exercise independent clinical judgment in complex or non-routine situations, adapting policies and procedures as needed.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record in compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations.
- Manage workload effectively to meet patient care demands and departmental priorities.
- Participate in SHAW meetings, campus initiatives, and professional development activities.
- Engage in ongoing professional learning and maintain active involvement in relevant professional organizations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Demonstrated ability to provide care to diverse populations and effectively engage with individuals across multiple, intersecting identities.
- Strong clinical competence in young adult health, public health, or college health.
- Commitment to student development, learning, and holistic well-being.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to function independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
- Proficiency in electronic medical record systems and willingness to complete required training.
- Knowledge of and compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and other applicable regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher.
- Current Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner licensure in the state of Minnesota.
- Active or eligible for DEA licensure and controlled substance registration.
- Successful credentialing through SHS, CSS, and SHAW.
- Completion of all required immunizations with documentation upon hire and ongoing compliance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner in an ambulatory care setting.
- Experience in college health, primary care, or family practice settings.
- Current faculty appointment within the Nursing program at The College of St. Scholastica.
