Student Success Coach – NEW!
Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for a Student Success Coach.
About the Role
Using a data-driven approach, the Student Success Coach fosters undergraduate student persistence and degree completion by coordinating academic support and other campus services for an assigned group of students. The coach’s goal is to assist students to ensure they are making sufficient academic progress and earning their degrees on time. This position helps students access other campus resources and provides holistic, growth-oriented, learning-centered, culturally-responsive, and strength-based support for students to help them identify and achieve their educational, personal, and professional goals. The coach begins working with students once they enroll at the university and helps with their transition to Hollins. They then continue meeting individually with students to help them understand academic opportunities, requirements, and other matters relevant to academic progress. This position reports to the Dean of Students.
Specific duties include the following:
- Provide holistic, growth-oriented, learning-centered, culturally-responsive, and strength-based support to help undergraduate students identify and achieve their educational, personal, and professional goals and connect them with resources within and beyond the Student Success Center
- Welcome new students during early summer and work collaboratively with Admission staff to ensure students’ successful transition to Hollins
- Regularly communicate with assigned students
- Build success plans collaboratively with individual students and campus partners
- Coordinate with students’ academic advisors regarding academic concerns and progress
- Work collaboratively with faculty and staff across the undergraduate program including Admission, advising, Career Development and Life Design, Center for Learning Excellence, Financial Aid, International Programs, and student life
- Attend weekly meetings as a member of the CARE (campus assessment, response, and evaluation) team
- Serve as designated lead for concerns arising for assigned students including communications through the Hollins early alert and other systems and manage those cases
- Work with supervisor to provide reports and identify students at risk of not meeting academic expectations
- Collect data to inform broader retention, persistence, and student success efforts
Position Qualifications
Successful applicants must have the following qualifications and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum of two years of experience in student services, academic support, higher education, or related experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills
- Excellent organizational, multitasking, detail, and accuracy skills
- Demonstrated success working effectively with students
- Ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with faculty and staff
- Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information and maintain discretion
- Deep understanding of and commitment to working in and fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment
- Demonstrated commitment to student success and advocacy for student needs
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
Preferred candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in a field related to social work, counseling, or higher education; familiarity with liberal arts curriculum and single-sex, small, residential campuses; and knowledge of FERPA and other regulations related to student information.
