Student Success Journalist
Job Overview
Inside Higher Ed seeks an enterprising, inquisitive journalist to write service journalism for student success professionals. The role focuses on providing actionable advice and ideas to promote best practices for supporting students in college and beyond.
Responsibilities:
- Sourcing and writing one student success story each day, generally between 500 and 1,000 words, including reported stories, roundup articles, research reports, and results of polls using reader submissions.
- Collating the weekly Student Success newsletter, showcasing coverage from the preceding week.
- Producing the regular Voices of Student Success podcast, which involves developing themes, finding guests, conducting, recording, and editing interviews, and managing sponsor relationships.
- Helping to share content and encourage reader conversations via social media platforms like X, Bluesky, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram, as well as occasional online and/or live events.
- Attending student success conferences, moderating or appearing on relevant panels as requested.
- Establishing connections with student success-focused higher education professionals and encouraging content contributions.
- Working with the Special Projects Editor to develop and report on annual student and student success administrator surveys.
Ideal Candidate:
- Has two or more years of full-time professional journalism experience with demonstrated critical thinking about presenting information.
- Has a strong interest in higher education; prior experience is a plus.
- Is a driven, organized self-starter able to juggle multiple assignments and meet daily deadlines.
- Has an interest in producing service journalism to help higher ed staff and faculty support students.
- Is confident in developing a professional presence as an expert in college student success.
- Lives in the greater D.C. area and can adapt to a hybrid work schedule: in-office Tuesday through Thursday, remote Monday and Friday.

This is a full-time position based in Washington, D.C., covered under a collective bargaining agreement with the Washington-Baltimore News Guild.
