Role Summary

As Student Success Tutor, you will be required to provide personalised, 1 to 1 or group academic support for students in achieving their academic goals. The Student Success Tutor plays a critical role in ensuring that students receive personalised guidance and support throughout their academic journey.

This role is designed to help students achieve their academic goals through proactive coaching and support. The Student Success Tutor will create individualised strategies and plans, working closely with students to set and track academic goals, overcome barriers to success, and engage with resources. The role contributes directly to improving retention and enhancing the overall student experience through close collaboration with academic departments and student support teams.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide personalised, 1 to 1 or group academic support for students in achieving their academic goals.
  • Build a relationship with students, to develop relevant individualised personal support and development plans.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students, ensuring they feel heard, supported, and empowered in their educational journey.
  • Collaborate with students to define specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals (SMART goals) and track progress toward these goals through regular check-ins and adapt plans as necessary.
  • Support students in understanding course material and assignments.
  • Identify and support at-risk students through early intervention, including addressing academic and personal issues that may impact retention.
  • Use data to identify students at risk of disengagement (e.g. low attendance) or academic decline.
  • Implement early intervention strategies to improve retention, such as proactive outreach, tailored action plans, and regular follow-up.
  • Collaborate with other departments, such as well-being and career services, to connect students with the resources they need.
  • Ensure a holistic approach to student success by promoting interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Maintain detailed records of student interactions, goals, interventions, and outcomes. Use this data to report on progress, identify trends, and refine student success strategies.
  • Monitor progress and adjust strategies as necessary to ensure continued academic and personal growth.
  • Analyse trends in student success to help develop effective retention programs.
  • Provide students with academic guidance and feedback on students’ progress and performance and discuss any academic challenges they may experience.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • A degree in a relevant subject (Education, Psychology, Student Support or a related discipline)
  • Qualifications in coaching, mentoring, or academic advising.
  • Knowledge or experience of the music industry, music education, or creative career pathways and an understanding of the pressures faced by students in these areas.

Desirable:

  • A PGCE or equivalent teaching qualifications (or willingness to work towards one)
  • Experience working in a student support, pastoral, or academic advisory role within higher or further education.
  • Experience working directly with creative or performing arts students, ideally within a music education environment.
  • Previous experience working and dealing with students
